Some useful sketchup tips to improve your modelling skill with sketchup

Given below, some handy tips for sketchup users to improve their modeling skills significantly.

01. Apply the 3D Warehouse gallery: examine and cleanse models prior to importing them.

There is a universe of downloadable 3D models made by other users that can fast-track the construction of your own models. To avoid adding additional information such as lines, layers, and materials, which will only increase file sizes, purge the model's components before saving them.

02. Place the model properly in space.

Geo-referencing a project facilitates you to consider it with regards to location, an intuitive quality for any successful architectural scheme. It is required to place a 3D model, avail it from the window> model information> geolocation> add location / define location customarily.

It is also very important to consider the time zone of each location.

03. Employ plugins and explore the new things in Extension Warehouse.

SketchUp users create different types of plugins which provide solution to the problems in each version as well as utilize the capability of accessible tools, and integrate new 3D modeling equipment.

Extensions are available from Solar North, which offer tools to fix the orientation for the angle of sunlight and shadows, to Sketchy FFD, a mesh operated with a series of control points in its vertices and edges to manipulate the dimensions of the chosen object.

04. Arrange and save your toolbar settings.

It is very crucial to customize the work surroundings as per your requirements and preferences. Make sure that your ideal settings are saved for future application, just manage sufficient time to arrange a toolbar. It will be possible to accomplish tasks in organized way and invest more time in concepts, design, and detailing.

05. Utilize groups and components to streamline editing and developing a model.

The most powerful feature of sketchup is to arrange models into groups of objects, lines or figures. The process is very quick and easy (secondary button> create group) and facilitate you to modify a specific section of your model (by double-clicking on it), keeping the other figures near the object unchanged. It is suggested to double-click on the newly generated surface, thus choose both faces and edges, and make a group prior to utilize the push / pull tool or any other modification.

Some useful free sketchup plugins to improve your modelling speed

Sketchup plugins are useful to increase modelling speed, save huge time and get superior result. The sketchup plugins will facilitate you to get rid of redundant tasks like extruding (push/pull) several surfaces or generating offsets and multiple copies etc. Just provide the data, and the plugins will do rest automatically.

Given below, an extensive lists of free sketchup plugins which will allow you to produce some creative designs quickly and efficiently.

Tips to set up a plugin of SketchUp :-

Initially, click on “Extension Manager”; the red coloured gem icon located on the far right of the toolbar. Alternatively, one can open “Extension Manager” from “Window” drop menu. Then, click on “Install Extensions” located at the bottom left of the Extension Manager Window. Now, select the extension file with the ‘rbz’ extension from the download folder. The extension will be visible in your list of extensions. Ensure it is enabled. If you restart SketchUp, the shortcut toolbar or icon of the installed extension will come into view.

1. Joint Push/Pull (sketchucation.com): It is a plugin that offers different options for extrusion of surfaces. Among these options, one is extruding multiple surfaces in parallel. Get help from the user manual furnished by the developer for more details.
You have to download the Free Library extension supplied by the same developer before that.
2. Multiple Offsets (sketchucation.com): This plugin accomplishes the similar functionality found in AutoCAD’s offset but in 3D. It is possible to chose one or more surfaces which are going to be offset and then select one of the three options.
3. CLF Shape Bender (extensions.sketchup.com): This plugin allows you to bend a group or a component to tally the path of a curve or even a free-hand line. It provides you a wireframe preview of the product prior to implementation.
4. RandomPushPull (sketchucation.com): This plugin can be used to generate different forms or playful wall cladding. It arbitrarily extrudes all the selected surfaces inside the range you enter. You only require to provide a minimum and a maximum value, then you will obtain a set of extruded surfaces with depths ranging among these two values.
5. FredoScale (sketchucation.com): This plugin offers a diversified scale transformation options to your model. These options comprise of stretching, tapering, and twisting among others.
6. Soap Skin & Bubble (extensions.sketchup.com): This plugin allows you to utilize a skin over the space among specified edges as well as generate a complicated yet smooth surface. However, this plugin is only free till April 2018.
7. Curviloft (sketchucation.com): This is very effective plugin developed by Fredo6 that provides a parametric edge to the simple modeling software. It contains 9 different modeling options to be generated from a set of selected curved lines.
8. Selection Toys (extensions.sketchup.com): This plugin provides you a wide array of selection options, same as QSelect or Filter in AutoCAD. In this way, it is possible to avoid modifying or eliminating the wrong entity.
9. Weld (extensions.sketchup.com): Similar to the Weld option in 3Ds Max, this plugin can be used to transform a set of connected lines and arcs into a single polyline.
10. Fredo6: Bezier Spline (sketchucation.com): This extension provides you huge lists of line drawing options which comprise of Polylines, Bezier and Spline curves. These baselines are helpful to produce unique forms.

Some useful tips to create cut openings in your sketchup model

In this sketchup video tutorial, you will be familiar with 5 different ways to cut holes and create openings in your sketchup geometry.

You will learn how to use push pool tool in sketchup to cut holes very easily and efficiently.

Next, you will learn how to apply intersect with model option to generate and eliminate faces. This options allow the users to connect cut out in different layers.

In SketchUp Make, it is possible to make the effect of a subtraction with the use of the Intersect with Model command. If Intersect with Model is used, the two shapes don’t have to be solid entities rather Intersect with Model employs a dissimilar effect if your shapes remain solids.

Then you will learn how to utilize cut components to cut openings in single thickness walls.

After that you will learn how to apply DoubleCut to cut openings in double walls.

Finally, you will learn how to employ the solid tools of sketchup pro to produce cut openings in your model.

Watch the following video tutorial to get more clear ideas.

nz_Camera – The newest sketchup plugin

Natale Zappia has developed nz_Camera, an exclusive plugin for sketchup. It is compatible with SketchUp 2016, SketchUp 2017, SketchUp 2018.

The plugin is useful for Film & Stage, Gaming, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, Woodworking and other.

Where is the camera situated? and what is the camera looking at!

It is possible to strategically trace the camera distantly from a strategic view. GoBack option allows you to instantly return to your original vantage point and establish another shot distantly from a birds-eyes view.

Views are preserved through SU:Scenes of course, but it is also possible to set up a ‘Named Camera Position’ in order that it becomes easier returning to the that scene with nz_Camera itself.

These markers can be easily detected in outliner and eliminated as soon as all the probabilities are examined graphically.

Some useful tips to enhance your rendering in v-ray 3.6 for sketchup

In this exclusive sketchup video tutorial, Mint from architectural inspiration, provides following handy tips which are useful for making more realistic rendering in v-ray 3.6 for sketchup.

1. Use surface imperfections – If the objects in your renderings appear to be very clean or accurate, it will seem a little unrealistic.

So, it is necessary to include some surface imperfections to the materials in your model.

2. Bevel your edges –Any accurate 90 degree edge exists in the real world. While viewing some objects having sharp corners and magnifying closer, a curvature or smoothness to that corner will be visible.

In computer graphics, this straight lines and sharp edges prevail by default. In order to check this, beveling or rounding the corners of your objects are recommended when required.

3. Use ambient occlusion – Ambient Occlusion alias AO stands for a shading process that allows you to generate soft shadows in cracks and crevices in any 3D objects while indirect lighting is thrown out into the scene.

Ambient Occlusion can provide more depth and definition to the geometry as well as more realism into your scene.

To learn how these are applied to a scene, go through the following video tutorial.
