Some useful tips to enhance your rendering in v-ray 3.6 for sketchup

In this exclusive sketchup video tutorial, Mint from architectural inspiration, provides following handy tips which are useful for making more realistic rendering in v-ray 3.6 for sketchup.

1. Use surface imperfections – If the objects in your renderings appear to be very clean or accurate, it will seem a little unrealistic.

So, it is necessary to include some surface imperfections to the materials in your model.

2. Bevel your edges –Any accurate 90 degree edge exists in the real world. While viewing some objects having sharp corners and magnifying closer, a curvature or smoothness to that corner will be visible.

In computer graphics, this straight lines and sharp edges prevail by default. In order to check this, beveling or rounding the corners of your objects are recommended when required.

3. Use ambient occlusion – Ambient Occlusion alias AO stands for a shading process that allows you to generate soft shadows in cracks and crevices in any 3D objects while indirect lighting is thrown out into the scene.

Ambient Occlusion can provide more depth and definition to the geometry as well as more realism into your scene.

To learn how these are applied to a scene, go through the following video tutorial.

Wall Thickness for 3D Printing

Wall thickness is necessary when you give your 3D model in print; otherwise, the 3D printer may not understand the thickness and thinness of the walls of your designs and print your model wrongly. So, it is the unwritten rule of designing 3D model in SketchUp to add wall thickness to your design. Paper-thin surfaces are strictly avoided for 3D printable models.

Setting the correct wall thickness needs your knowledge and proficient skills in designing. 3D printing materials and 3D models are two different subjects. The right wall thickness makes your 3D model print flawless, and it appears the same as you expect.

Choose the perfect wall for your 3D printing:

3D designing is an interesting field that grows rapidly in the world. This has made the craze for 3d printing materials used for various purposes. So, it is necessary to learn how to print a 3D model properly the way the design shows. In the designing software, you no need to work on the thickness surfaces to make your model. But when it comes to printing, it is an obligatory thing to add wall thickness. It helps 3D printer understand how thick of the surfaces are and print accordingly.

Wall thickness is defined as the distance between one surface and its opposite sheer surface. There are a few things that have an impact on choosing how much thickness you want for the surfaces. Materials would definitely come first in the list. The other factors that show a direct connection with the design are alignment, size and overall design.

A guide to proper 3D printing with the wall thickness:

Printing materials play definitely an important role, and depending on which, you can opt for the minimum thickness of your wall. It needs a basic knowledge of different printing materials. If your design needs strong materials like high detailed stainless steel or titanium, you can keep your wall thickness indeed thick as the materials allow you to do so.

The other factors are also there to watch on your 3D printing issue. Structure and design of your 3D models can be the decider of the wall thickness of the surfaces. For example, a print of vertical wall with 5mm2 wall surface needs 0.3mm wall thickness while a vertical wall with the 100mm2 wall surface needs 1mm thickness. If you are printing a horizontal wall with 100mm2 areas, then the wall thickness must be of 2mm. To set a proper wall thickness, you have to be correct while setting inputs like the size of the surface, the alignment (horizontal and vertical).

The materials like ceramics which are fragile need different attention from the strong and hard materials. The larger the model is, the stronger the structure must be – this is considered to be the general rule while printing on the comparatively fragile surface. For example, the ceramic model of 50 mm x 50 mm x 50 mm needs a minimum thickness of 3mm. a ceramic object with 100 mm x 100 mm x 100 mm has 6mm thickness for printable.

The other factors attached with 3D printing:

While preparing your model for 3D printing, you have to be very cautious while dealing with each factor of your design. The essential details are

• It is common to give the primary attention on the wall with minimum thinness. But problems arise with the wall of maximum thickness. Thicker parts produce stress more than the thinner ones, resulting in a crack or break in the materials.
• To avert breaks on your print, it is always recommended to have an extra thickness of 5mm wall.

Your every design surface needs a recommended wall thickness to keep your model perfect for printing. It is an extraordinary process where you can visualize your virtual 3D models in real. So, having wall thickness is as much necessary as having a correct designing idea.

How to set up light for a daytime interior rendering with Vray 3.4 for sketchup

In this construction video tutorial, Minh from Architecture Inspirations, briefly explains the method to arrange the lighting perfectly for a daytime interior rendering with Vray 3.4 for sketchup.

The step-by-step methods include the followings :-
Trace your main light source
Modify camera settings
Improve the Sunlight
Lighten dark shadows
Modify sun settings
Notes :- Render settings are very crucial and there exist various rendering conditions like interior shots, dusk shots, and daytime shots which need diverse setups.
In V-Ray for Sketchup, the V-Ray interface runs within Sketchup. Different things like the sun, cameras, and materials are associated with each other among the two programs. If the sun angle in Sketchup is modified, the sun angle in V-Ray will also be changed.
Usually, the sun angle should be modified in Sketchup to set the shadows in proper position prior to move to V-Ray. The Sketchup scene that is going to be rendered in V-Ray should be saved by going to “View>Animation>Add Scene”.
It is very useful while overlaying Sketchup image exports on top of the V-Ray renderings or it is required to render the similar view subsequently.
To learn the complete process, watch the following video tutorial.

How to produce a realistic interior rendering – Some useful tips by Minh

Minh from Architecture Inspirations provides some handy tips (10 tips) to transform your interior rendering process to the next level with v-ray 3.4 for sketchup.

For making a good design, it is necessary to get better idea or conception. For this purpose, do some online research. You can create your own library with high resolution image. You can visit some good sites like houzz, pinterest etc.
Always try to employ superior quality components. It is recommended to download 3d components from 3d warehouse or utilize 3d warehouse tool to search for images directly from sketchup.
Be careful about the scale of your objects. Ensure your objects remain at perfect scale while going to import objects into your scene. If the objects are too big or too small, your rendering may become unrealistic.
It is suggested to apply premium materials. High quality materials are better than low quality materials as they have superior resolution. Premium materials comprises of various maps so that your mateirls appear to be more realistic at the time of rendering.
Avoid applying wide angle shot. This type of shot is used to capture everything in scene but it may cause a bad composition where viewers become confused regarding what to focus on. So, it is advisable to employ tighter frame for the composition of your scene.
Besides, adding light for lightening the scene, also use the camera settings for this purpose. It is suggested to apply render elements to your final output prior to render.
Utilize VFB window to edit your image if you don’t have photoshop or other image editing software installed.
For having detail shot of your scene, consider employing depth of field.
If you utilize photoshop for post production, then it is advisable to apply Nik collection plugin in photoshop to get better result.

Project Management Modeling at Trilogy Partners

About Trilogy Partners: It is a design-build firm situated in Breckenridge, Colorado and is specialized in arranging residential projects. It is the trusted, accountable, experienced expert which exploits its creative ideas and solutions for helping clients navigate change. The company provides clear direction, developing partnerships, high performing business processes and advanced growth strategies which led towards the continuous profits and growth.

In the interview with the CEO, Michael Rath the comprehensive approach of using a virtual model as the basis for project management for architectural and interior design, engineering, communications and construction management by using SketchUp can be seen.

Difference between Trilogy manages projects and 3D models: The Base 3D model at Trilogy got its uniqueness by the length of the project. At first the project get started with a note taking session and a few concept sketches then a driveway substitute on a printed survey will be done. The building envelope consists with some circles that were representation of the garage and the great room. A virtual environment is a main workspace for everyone who is connected to the project mainly the client. SketchUp allows for the logical evolution of concepts and ideas and project management modeling process or PMM which is the most useful part always preservative and progressive. In the previous software for working between one stages to another the user needed to sketch, print, Copy, move to CAD and at last make a print all of this and make a note to give the client the description.

But now it can be only done in a model, keeping up the work only in the Base Model, like sculpting, shaping and seeing the things that can be fitted in it, the user doesn’t need to move. User can works moving ever forward till the time the team agrees that they have reached their goal to make a perfect design. Some tasks like cabinetry, trim, doors, engineering, tile, fireplaces, built in furnishings, closet development, plumbing, lighting and hardware works can be done outside the base model also in the different SketchUp files. But these all can be finalized in the base model when the model will be ready to receive and work on them.

Distinction between PMM and BIM: This process is not the BIM at Trilogy but it is PMM which means that the whole structure will be made in SketchUp as it is easy, affordable, fast and adaptable process. The model will be filled with all the information which the builder required and by using SketchUp components all the things that would be manufactured can be represented. It will help the user to describe the source, budget, order, ship and installing them perfectly. PMM builds a virtual structure that looks and feels like real deal so that the client and other ones could understand where to build. PMM is a truthful, accessible model bespoken to the most benefited people.

The process of keeping the models organized and easy to operate: The models of Trilogy partners are quite big and rich but SketchUp has the capacity to handle the greater complexity. But Trilogy designers have also been trying to develop the models to make them smaller than before. They have succeeded as they could now calculate the file size before dropping it into the model. They use 3D Warehouse and choose the component models carefully for the clients that would be fitted best in the model. By keeping the file small and textures below 100 Kb the model could be maintained well.

The future level of work in SketchUp: In future they are going to include full engineering details in their virtual products and also working with SketchUp for heightening the BIM aspects of the program for streamline the PMM process.

The role of extension in the Trilogy workflow: Extensions sometime uses in SketchUp for creating slowly and consciously in SketchUp for the most part as the app supplies. A lot of extensions sometime make the work simple but they are not ready for the real world. There are some extensions to help in workflow in the areas of site and terrain set up.

The secret behind X, Y and Z: The work product of SketchUp is very expensive and sometimes 3D modeling looks like a luxury. But a well executed SketchUp strategy gives a fantastic model and lowers the project cost also. As the construction problems in the model and in the construction site can be resolved to save the money. With a good PMM model a supervisor can handle more projects in a lower cost and risk. The well executed SketchUp process ‘Shocker’ can actually lower the costs and built the future on PMM.

SketchUp Camera Tool – Change the View of your Design

In SketchUp, you have to have a complete idea about the View tool since it gives your design an ultimate angle. A good designer earns an in-depth knowledge of how to use every feature of view to make their design the best. Camera tool generally works in two ways – one that jumps views from one point to another such as back, left, right, and from; another moves camera position from one point to another such as zoom and pan.

The view tool stays in the Camera option from where you can navigate the position of your model visually. Take a note of the content below that provides you with a comprehensive idea of what View tool offers.

• Iso: it is for giving your design a slightly angled front view. It has a specific application in your design with adding perspective and relationship of the project.
• Top: as the name says, it is for the top view of your model. Sometimes, Top view creates a flat look of your model. Use Zoom in and out to recognize the actual distance of your model.
• Front: the front view proves to be the best option when you start designing on SketchUp first.
• Right: the Right tool allows you to jump from back to front, right and left views.
• Back: Back gets less attention as compared to the other sides of your design. But the back view is as essential as the other view of the model.
• Orbit tool: with this tool, you can see the view from any direction of your model. Navigating the application is also easier. To observe the different views of the model, you need to drag your model to the direction you want to see.
• Pan Tool: Pan tool helps you move the model from one point to another. You will proceed along with the gradual move of the design. Using the tool is like grabbing and dragging a model.
• Zoom: the tool used has been used in the same way as it was used. Zoom in for observing the smallest detailing and Zoom out for view the model in a biz size.
• Zoon Extent: this feature generally zooms out your model to the maximum extent.

Viewing your design from right direction is as much essential as a flawless design. The above-said tool will help you choose the right angle and sites you want to observe your design. To know how to use the camera angle more prominently, visit
