Creating Polygons in SketchUp in 5 seconds

SketchUp is full of various 3D models, tools and extensions which is a little tough to handle for beginners, creating a Polygon in SketchUp with some easy tools is good start for beginners.

Creating different figures in SketchUp is an easy work which can be done with the help of some tools found in this software. In every article we discuss about some complex thing which can’t be done without applying lots of extensions and tools but these are strictly for professionals who have been using SketchUp for over years. Beginners or novice users are not fully aware about all these extensions, that’s why we have come up with a simple item this time which can be useful for them

About SketchUp: SketchUp or Google SketchUp is mainly a 3D modeling computer program that is used for a broad range of drawing applications used by architects, interior designer, landscape architects, civil and mechanical engineers, film and video game designers also. SketchUp can be getting as a freeware version named SketchUp Make and a paid version with many more extra benefits called SketchUp Pro. SketchUp is software from Trimble Company and there is an online library of free model congregations and 3D Warehouse to which users can add other models; besides that, the program has drawing layout functionality with variable ‘styles’, supports third-party ‘plug-in’ programs hosted on the Extension Warehouse to supply other abilities and enables placement of its models in Google Earth. As SketchUp users are most of architects, designers, builders, makers and engineers etc. who works hard to give a nice shape to our physical world, they need great tools to do the work.

In this article, we will see the steps of creating a polygon using some simple tools in SketchUp but before that we need to know a little bit about polygon.

The Polygons are mainly two-dimensional closed figure which are made up of some straight lines and here each line segments intersects exactly at the endpoints.

Creating equilateral polygons in SketchUp is just a matter of seconds as it is not necessary to draw each side manually. Here are the steps:

  • At first users need to select the Shape tool from the toolbar or can press C for the shortcut.
  • At the bottom right corner there is a status bar where they need to specify the number of sides after selecting the shape tool. Here users can type anew number and SketchUp will make a new equilateral shape with that number of sides.
  • After specifying the number of sides, SketchUp will ask for the radius of polygon and it will be an inscribed polygon.

"About Maciej Fijalowski of VR Sketch"

Maciej Fijalkowski is the one member among the founders of the VR Sketch in SketchUp, he and his team is working on developing VR with SketchUp to make it more accessible.

Maciej Fijalkowski is the surfer, programmer and climbing gym designer about the current state of VR industry and the one behind the VR Sketch extension. He is basically from Łódź, Poland but now living at Cape Town Area, South Africa. He went to Warsaw for study; he always wanted to go and study abroad but couldn’t afford so he started to explore more as a traveler. He also worked at the University of Warsaw at the Center for Mathematical and Computational Modeling; while working there and being a student he got into Google Summer of Code and became interested in Pypy.

Later his company has introduced a new concept into the Sketch Up word with VR Sketch which enables the creation, manipulation and presentation of models in a fully immersive virtual reality environment.

A little about VR Sketch: It is an extension for SketchUp which gives anyone the ability to create, edit and view their models in Virtual Reality. It also gives designers the ability to communicate space that clearly allows them well informed decisions to make with instant feedback. VR Sketch is a small but a dynamic company which plans to revolutionize the thinking of people about the way of design and faster design. The landscape of hardware abilities will only improve and everyone can see more and more design work done in VR. Sketch will keep iterating quickly to deliver cutting edge solutions for more years.

Inspiration behind VR Sketch: As per his words, during the process of designing and creating a new rock climbing gym, he purchased a VR headset as a help in visualizing projects. Though SktechUp is a very easy to learn but it can be difficult while mapping of 2D screens to 3D space. So they thought to make something which will help to solve this problem and thus they started the company in April 2018. Maciej is now living in Cape Town with his co-founder, Duncan Fraser who is an architect and travels often.

Projects: The team has handled many things together in past but from a long time they only focused on a project called Pypy which is an open source software for a faster way to run Python code. VR Sketch is their first venture into architecture and design which has introduced to the through SketchUp 3D Basecamp with greater diversity in those attending versus the Python conferences. VR Sketch needs less of any skills which a trained architect must have and helps architects to work more easily on the 3D models.

VR Sketch works with all the high-end hardware like HTC Vive, Oculus Rift those with touch controllers and some mixed reality headsets. They have been working on more major headsets which will be function by Oculus Quest. The team has focused on doing things well for the higher-end devices and consider the availability of any design tool to be a main consideration.

Industry trends to follow for future app development: According to them, much of 3D design will move into the VR space and everyone will see huge iterations in hardware design. Headsets will be lighter and more affordable and controllers will be less clumsy. Software side will also be upgraded with major changes; this huge evolution and interconnection between hardware and software in the VR industry will create many more opportunities for them. Now they are working on a cloud-enabled collaboration which help users in working on a model with distant team members simultaneously and keep a full version control.

Dream Project: He is really interested in urban design and with an unlimited budget, he would be involved in developing a “Chartered City” as theorized by Paul Romer, where it is possible to play with new ideas every time.

"An extension ecosystem with Christina Eneroth”

SketchUp is a most loved extension all over the world with lot of extensions of work on 3D models; Christina Eneroth has added some new extensions which are lacking in it.

The SketchUp extension is full of wonderful tools or commands that make the 3D modeling in SketchUp much easier; users can download all these tools or extensions and upload their models in the warehouse for others. It is an online resource with various plug-ins developed made especially for SketchUp and these extensions help to add some special tools and features to SketchUp. These extensions can be found for any particular application like drawing or 3D printing and some industry specified tools for architecture, interior design, construction and many more.

But there are some tools which are still not found in SketchUp Extension there Julia Christina Eneroth starts here work. She builds those tools or commands for users and she has been doing it since a long time. She is a designer and developer in SketchUp and till now has published about 66 extensions and plugins to Extension Warehouse; she also has created virtually her very own 3D modeling ecosystem.

First experience with SketchUp: Julia Christina Eneroth was first introduced to SketchUp while working on shadowing an architect in elementary school; she downloaded the free version and worked at home. In those earlier days, SketchUp download took a very long time and 3D Warehouse had a 10 MB file size limit so there wasn’t much space to publish models.

First extensions in SketchUp: Her first script was for assigning layers to geometry called Scholss Eneburg, a castle with many levels with different ceiling heights and floors. It became impossible to look inside the model with SketchUp’s native section cut tool so she thought to write her first ever SketchUp Ruby script. But as the quality of the code was not that strong so she abandoned some projects, made some small changes and there she learned about code readability, decoupling and organization the hard way. According to here, while developing an extension anyone must think about its intended scope; as adding an extra feature in extension is easy but adding it without a scope will make it messy.

The Castle Project: Julia is always been fascinated by castles and once she started a high school project on castle which took a long time, her lots of hard work and skills on SketchUp. Though it was a single project, but actually it was a combination of all her previous works and made her learn about SketchUp.

Her new ideas about new extensions: All of her new extensions are created as her own need of modeling workflow and these extensions at first start as a few lines of code or a single line which she writes in the Ruby console to make it easier. After that, she builds a proper UI, designs the icons, writes documentation and creates images to describe it.

Julia’s five favorite extensions:

  • Swift Layer Visibility Control: It makes layer visibility control more flowing; she created it as a shortcut for hiding the selected layers. Another shortcut shows all layers and another one re-hides all layers that were last shown and created by Eneroth herself.
  • Selection Toys: It is made by Thom Thom and a must-have product that allows users to select existence by a certain criteria often based on the previous selected to make modeling more efficient.
  • Tool Memory: Designed by Eneroth, it helps to swap back and forth between tools without having to move fingers to the different shortcuts.
  • Solid Tools
  • Solid Inspector

Native extensions to SketchUp: Though according to her, very few extensions are native to SktechUp, but Weld should be a native command.

"Classical Architectural Modelers talked about nine Workflow tips”

Classical Architectural modelers of Holygon have been working on 3D models since a long time and they apply some kind of tips for perfect models.
Holygon is a Swedish Company that specializes in making historically-precise digital models for visual and 3D printing applications. At 3D Basecamp 2018, Founders Andres Lyhagen and Felix Heuman have presented how to accurately model urban spaces for 3D printing; they also shared their top workflow tips with the whole SketchUp community.

It combines deep knowledge of traditional design principles with command of recent digital technology to create state-of-art digital and physical 3D models of cities, architecture and other bespoke forms. They specialized in accuracy-modeling large urban cityscapes and individual buildings ready for true-to-life full-color 3D printing. Besides, they also program custom 3D tools, teach the art of 3D and visualize 3D models.
3D Basecamp 2018: 3D Basecamp is a much awaited place for all types of SketchUppers where they meet to teach, learn and inspire each other and this time 3D basecamp is going to held in Palm Springs at California from September 24th to 28th 2018. It is the program of a full week which most probably will be the best week for all the SketchUp lovers as they can develop their 3D modeling skills, increase the social circle by connecting with more people and can view the beauty of California.

The first two days will only be focused on SketchUp Bootcamp training track where the bootcamp meetings will be hands-on workshops that are exact for learning SketchUp or just simple upgrading the industrial workflows. After that there will be a 3 day conference which is the most popular 3D basecamp ticket which includes the main Basecamp conference track with a set of bootcamp training workshops for both novice and medium SketchUp users. The total 5 days conference and training both can be attained by the specified ticket. By signing up for the 3D basecamp Conference and Essential Training ticket, SketchUppers can get the chance to take SketchUp 102 and 201 courses, a basic training for architectural design, design/build and interior design. Besides that, there is an important agenda of presentations like details and estimates, drones and scanning, VR and Visualization, 3D printing and CNC, concept art and prop making, low-poly and many more.

  • Here are workflow tips to follow while modeling in SketchUp:
  • Control the expression: Their initial drafts are fully hand-drawn as they follow traditional principles and use traditional elements like pedestals, columns, entablature etc.
  • Quality references: They always search the highest quality measured drawings of a certain order; with quality they never take a risk.
  • Know your form: Seeing a thing in a way matters while working on it.
  • Know the tools: SketchUp has always multiple solutions for every challenge, like there are lots of tools to work. Before working on any design, it is important to know the exact tools to use as it will add perfection.
  • Draw contours: Drawing in 2D may take longer than finishing 3D volumes but using shortcuts will help to make the exact layers.
  • Solid: modeling in all solids needs discipline and solid modeling principle is a fierce teacher but also a better option.
  • Components: It helps both performance and model management as it applies at multiple abstraction levels.
  • Combining independent parts: Always make separate parts of a design and then combine them it will give the sharp edged model.
  • Finalizing model: They finalize models after completing all other parts.

"Downloading free Textures from Poliigon and using them in SketchUp/VRAY Renderings”

Textures add the realistic look in any model and Poliigon’s website is full of different textures which will increase the rendering view in SketchUp 3D models or in Vray.

Justin Geis: Justin Geis is the founder of The SketchUp Essentials and started using SketchUp while he was working as a general contractor in 2008 and after using it he found that SketchUp is extremely powerful that he just started to use it in his personal works also. Then he started The SketchUp Essentials as a place where he could share his ideas of using SketchUp easily through some tutorials and tips to help other users controlling the power of 3D Modeling in everyday lives.

In today’s article we will discuss about an online source that is contained of textures which can be used in any 3D models and renderings. There are many different websites which can also be used to download textures to use both in the SketchUp models, as well as for some programs like Vray, Unreal Engine and many more. This is a guidance to help the users in downloading and importing materials from Polligon.com into every SketchUp model, besides that there are some tips for setting the materials up within Vray for really creating more realistic renderings.

These free textures can get from www.poliigon.com , where users need to go on the top of the page to click the Sign Up button and it is absolutely free of cost website. After signing up, users can find there premium textures that can be purchased access to, as well as there are some great free textures that can be downloaded. Next they will find the texture stab, from where they have to go down to click on “Free textures” option; after clicking on this it will show a list of all the free textures available through Polligon where are list of wonderful materials to work.

Here is an example of texture-

SketchUp or Google SketchUp is mainly a3D modeling computer program that is used for a broad range of drawing applications used by architects, interior designer, landscape architects, civil and mechanical engineers, film and video game designers also. SketchUp is in mission to bring their best to produce some great tools for drawing as drawing is the key thing of the SketchUp users. They draw to search ideas, to identify the things and to show other people their work that they do with love and love to build; SketchUp understands it truly and trying to improve their software day by day. SketchUp is a worth useful software for its ease of use, it can be downloaded or installed o computer and right after that user can work on it. Though SketchUp can easily handle but still there are some sides where people will find some difficulties and lots of solve also are there like YouTube tutorials upon SketchUp or visiting SketchUp website or search Google etc. But people will get confused to have lots of information from different places upon one thing so there should a proper place or website where all the answers can be found.

Plaster 17: When users will select this texture they will get a preview window that will show the material and its look while rendering. It also shows a list of different maps that can be downloaded such as normal maps, reflections etc. They also have a pretty worthy set of free textures and one of the nice things about them is that they have different maps which users may need to link up various things like normal maps to coarsen the surface or reflection maps to make the rendered reflections look better and more. Users can select very high resolutions also but it should keep in mind that though higher resolutions look more realistic but SketchUp may face some trouble with working them. After downloading the file, users can unzip it and place the materials in their file; next it need to bring into Vray by opening up the Asset Editor, then go to the Material List and click the “Add Material” button at the bottom of the page and select “Generic”. From here, users can add the maps into Vray material, clicking on the right arrow button will help to expand the window off to the right where they can add texture to this material by selecting the little box next to “Diffuse” and finding the color map. This option will add the texture image to the material and going in the material section, the size of the material can adjust; also adding different maps from the material it become more realistic.

"Projecting with SketchUp Follow Me Tool”

SketchUp users have worked with various tools in 3D models and among them SketchUp Follow Me tool is one that is used to control a face collaboratively along with a path.

There are many tools within SketchUp which are useful in creating 3D models or geometry and one of them is the SketchUp Follow Me Tool. It is the Pied Piper of 3D geometry that controls a face collaboratively a path for creating a 3D shape and it is the only thing this tool does. But it has a multitude of applications and enables users to draw complex 3D models with only a few clicks. Follow Me tool is users favorite tool as it is very handy in modeling finishing details that track a perimeter or edge like crown modeling or gutters and also make easier to work with modeling boarded objects like a spindle and curved vessels etc.

This tool can be found in the places of SketchUp like: Tools menu, Edit Toolbar, Large Tool Set Toolbar and Tool Palette in macOS. Here are some examples of applying Follow Me tool in different modeling:

  • Automatically projecting a profile with Follow Me:
It is the easiest method of all and usually preferable way using the Follow Me tool, the method follows the steps to extrude the face automatically. At first users need to raw a profile of the face that needs to follow the path and this profile has to be nearly perpendicular to the path; then using the Select Tool the continuous set if edges have to select that depict the path. Next select the Follow Me tool and click on the created profile where the surface is projected automatically along users’ preselected path.

2.Manually projecting a profile with Follow Me:

Extruding or projecting a profile along a path manually is a matter of a bit more work but users can easily control the direction the extrusion goes through some steps. Users at first have to identify the path for the extrusion, they need to draw a face or profile that want to follow the path and this profile has to be perpendicular to the path. Then select the Follow Me tool, click and drag the created face along the path; while dragging the mouse pointer will touch the created path and SketchUp will automatically highlight the path in red color. If the starting edge does not start the profile, then Follow Me will start extruding at the edge; at last click to finish the Follow Me operation after reaching the end of the path.

3.Modeling a lathed shape with Follow Me:

Follow Me tool can also be used to replicate a lathe through the following steps: at first draw a circle using the Circle tool; next the Line, Arc and Freehand tools are used to draw a cutaway of half of the final shape. Now the cutaway will create a face which is perpendicular to the circle and the bottom of the cutaway aligns with the center point of the circle. Now use the Select tool to select the circle, next click o the Follow Me tool on the face of the cutaway; this particular step needs some time to complete.

"Multiple Profiles can be handled by Follow Me extension"

SketchUp Warehouse is full of various wonderful and useful extensions and tools that make the design thing a lot easier, Follow Me is the newest of them with some unique features.

Aaron Dietzen this time comes with his new useful creation of importing and exporting via SketchUp Shop which is the newest thing for SketchUp users. This article will describe the whole process according to Aaron and his video tutorial where the new tool Follow Me Tool is introduced and Aaron is in love with this tool as it can be used as a substitute of Push/Pull tool.

About Follow Me Tool: The SketchUp Follow Me tool is the Pied Piper of 3D geometry as it leads a face with a path to build a 3D shape. Though this is the only thing this tool does but it has a pack of applications and enables the users for drawing difficult 3D models with only a few clicks. The Follow Me tool can find in many places in SketchUp like Tools menu, Edit toolbar, Large Tool Set toolbar and Tool palette (macOS).

Aaron has been using as a replica of Push/Pull tool and also as a modification tool; in his words though Push/Pull tool is great but while he wants to seep a molding profile around a room or round-off the corner of a table he can easily does with this tool. But there are lots of places when he finds difficulty to use this tool such as while working with a bunch of shapes and have them all follow the same path. Follow Me tool will do the work but with an unwilling way where lots of selecting, path picking, then Follow Me tool, and then again picking the profile etc. which will continue to the next shape again. So it is a time taking matter for everyone and Aaron tried to solve this problem with using some idea and through his video tutorial he has presented the whole matter well. This article is a little description of his taken steps and here is also the tutorial link for further help; so let’s begin:

Aaron has created a wonderful model where he has used a lot of shapes of different sizes and he has made all those shapes and sizes to follow a single path in one click. At first he has selected the path and then click on Follow Me icon; after clicking the exact work the tool does as it name replicates it created a whole Follow Me path on the selected areas. Again he did the same thing; selected the path and clicked the Follow Me tool to create another path from the shape and it will continue till the last shape gets completed under Follow Me path. Actually the shapes like circle or rectangular are made at the end of the Railing bar to make them able in using the Follow Me tool; he has created some little shapes there and he drew a rectangle over the first shape and then copy it through all the shapes that created another thing. He just used the Follow Me tool and clicked on the rectangular shape to make it a covered area. Next he took the top of the shape and deleted couple lines which created a followed path with detailed design. The same thing he has done with his next shape; like working with the stairs, he created inside and outside to make a voy, then copied the ‘N’ shape on the other side and repeated the whole process again.
