Some new functionalities of FredoPortrait sketchup plugin

In this sketchup video tutorial, you will be familiar with some new features of FredoPortrait sketchup plugin to transform a complex 3D model into 2D FaceMe geometry.

FredoPortrait is a useful sketchup extension that can be used to generate custom camera views and export custom images from inside of sketchup.

The plugin comprises of a custom camera tool that saves and loads cameras captured from the viewport. Custom Cameras are preserved within the model or at Sketchup level, which create a way to move cameras across models.

Portrait Studio contains a wide array of tools which are used to identify a camera precisely and clarify the view depending on the selection. It then facilitates to create or update scenes, images in different formats, and more commonly render or export the selection with the native Sketchup exporters or 3rd party exporters. It also facilitates to create 2D Components out of selected 3D objects (for SU2018 and higher versions).

FredoPortrait is applied for the following purposes :

1. Move cameras inside a model and across models.
2. Create images and exports of the selection only
3. Create 2D components from selected 3D objects (for SU2018 and higher version)
4. Modify the camera positions and save them as scenes.

Most features are available in the FredoPortrait Studio dialog box.

MeshWrapper Tool 1.0.1 for Sketchup

MeshWrapper Tool is another useful sketchup extension from Cadman. It is compatible with SketchUp 2014, SketchUp 2015, SketchUp 2016, SketchUp 2017, SketchUp 2018, SketchUp 2019.

It offers a series of tools for generating an exterior shell around 3D geometry, streamlining the model and leads to an equally distributed surface mesh around the object.

The Wrap Objects tool provides a consistent grid mesh around an object(s). The dissimilar grid projections belong to each group inside an overall MeshWrapper group. Each grid mesh is formed with a quad faces, and is well suited with quad face tools.

Choose the object(s) to be covered with a mesh. Then fill out the Gridding Options dialog:

the Grid spacing size. If this number belongs to a negative number, the longest dimension of the object(s) will be subdivided with that number to settle the grid size.

the mesh projection style, either all around (surround), Top and Bottom, Front and Back, or Right and Left.

the Shard filter indicates a grid edge multiplier. When the length of an edge goes beyond this multiplier, its triangle will be excluded of the final mesh.

Stitch edges: The subgroups of the mesh are detached from one another, but their perimeter grid cells are modified to sui each other while the Stitch edges variable is fixed to ‘yes’.

The Seam Zipper tool stitches the edges of two grid seams collectively, or fills in a 1x grid inside a mesh.

Ensure there exist an edge on each end of the seam opening to transform each end of the seam as a single grid width 'boxed end'. A boxed end is when an edge contains faces entirely encircling it on one side.

To get more details or purchase the extension, go through the following link extensions.sketchup.com

Choose the ‘box ends’ of the seam and the Seam zipper tool stitches the grid seams jointly.

The Reverse group faces tool reverses all faces inside a selected group.

If a seam from Seam Zipper is facing inside out, reverse it with the ‘Reverse group faces’ tool. Then rupture the seam group and it merges into the encompassing mesh.

The Diagonals to quads tool converts pairs of triangles into a quad face (four sided face). Choose the common edge among the triangles, (or multiple diagonals) and the tool will convert them into quad faces.

"Curic Space for SketchUp Function description”

SketchUp Extension Curic Space is designed to help users to space objects inside the models quickly and users can use this extension for making copies of single objects etc.

This article is about the new SketchUp Plugin, Curic Space is an extension that gives users many options for spacing objects equally within SketchUp.

Curic Space: The simplest function of this extension is to choose multiple different objects, then selecting the axis with which users like the objects to be spaced and users can give any value to adjust the spacing. The entering of space values can be done as long as users don’t click out of the tool; they can also space across multiple axes by clicking on a new axis and typing in a value. Besides all of this, this extension also has an object duplication tool that can be activated in two simple steps: at first users need to click on a single instance of an object and then click on the Curic Space icon.

This extension does three things which are:

  • Creating Copies of Single Objects
  • Space objects based on the object centers
  • Space objects based on object origins
Copying objects: Users can create copies of objects with Curic space by selecting a single object and clicking the curic space button. If user selects only one object, the extension will ask the number of copies want to create and after creating the copies, all are inserted at the same point that can only space out by Curic space.

Spacing objects based on centres: The following extension allows users to neglect objects based on object centers where the center is found as pr the selected objects, then space every along a selected direction. Users can type in a numerical value and press the enter key to space every object; also users can enter a different value and press enter key to put different spacings.
Spacing objects based on origin: Curic space also has the option where users can space objects based on the object origin which can be useful while dealing with objects which are not the same width.

"Design parts in SketchUp to connect for 3D printing”

SketchUp models are suitable for 3D printing but it only can happen when the parts of any model are assembled together, there are different ways to assemble those parts.

In the previous tutorials of Sketch Up, Aidan and Rebecca have shown us the way to cut Sketch Up model into parts but the matter is now to assemble them in a way for printing them. There are many other strategies and features in SketchUp like mechanical or else to help in building into the model to assemble the parts together. Aidan and Rebecca are going to show the users through different processes and here is a brief discussion on it.

Tolerance in SketchUp: It is the difference between the sizes of users’ part in SketchUp and the size of the part produced by their 3D printer. Suppose a user has drawn a 10mm cube in SketchUp and printed it, none of the sizes of the printed cube will be shown exactly 10mm; though these are very small differences like a few tenths of a millimeter more r less. But they can create problems if their 3D printed parts have to connect with the parts that already exist in the real world. That’s why the manufacturer of the 3D printers gives a unique number for the machine’s tolerance which may be in either plus or minus value. This value is called the Maximum variation for that machine and users both need to be aware while working.

Tolerance in SketchUp: Clearance is like an extra space for parts to slide past one another but users may face a little difficulty while installing similar size peg in a similar sized hole as they will not go together. The peg and the hole will not fit properly with each other in SketchUp but in real world they will not react like this as there the peg needs to connect with friction. The exterior of the peg is similar as the exterior of the hole that the friction between them will keep the peg from veer going in if the fit is too perfect for them. In that case, users need to add a small amount of space called clearance which will help the two parts to slide past each other; the amount of clearance depends on the exact movement of the part.

Glue in SketchUp: Glue is the universal way to stick things but it is also the weakest and most unreliable way as it has very little strength o keep the things tighter for long.

  • The plastics which are used in 3D prints defined by the names ABS, PLA, PVA, nylon and PETT; all these plastics need a special glue to stick and the glues have to order online.
  • Biodegradable starch plastics consists a crystalline structure that doesn’t go well with liquid superglue which stays liquid and move unexpectedly across the surface of the part.
  • Instead of glue, users can use epoxy which is though a messy stuff but will stick to anything.
  • No glue can stick to the flexible materials for 3D printers so to attach parts, a process called thermal welding.

Snap fittings in SketchUp: These are properly designed to pop the models together after the parts come off the printer and as these are removable so users can change out many parts of the model as per design. In SketchUp, snap fittings are created by two general steps: 1) creating the tongue with the Line and Push/Pull tools; 2) creating a matching capture point on the opposing part.

Press Fit in SketchUp: A press fit is the very little clearance between the two parts while designing and when the parts are pressed together forcibly, friction keeps the joint together without any extra hardware or glue. To make a press fit, the Offset tool is used to create an outer lip on one side of the connection and an inner lip on other side.

Bolts, Screws and Hardware in SketchUp: The strongest connection between 3D printed parts is holding together with metal hardware and these connections are great for things that are more than just prototypes. While integrating hardware into the design, include hardware in the SketchUp model as it will take measurements of the parts users need to use and model them in SketchUp. Then save the components in the component library for using them in further models.

Six free sketchup plugins to improve your design skill

SketchUp is a powerful 3D modeling software specifically useful for architects and interior designers. It also gains popularity among the maker community.

Plugins stand for the tools which are created by members of the SketchUp user community who prefer to improve the native tools by adding more features. Most are free and accessible in the SketchUp Extension Warehouse or in the Sketchucation Plugin Store.

Given below, the detail lists of 6 free sketchup pluigns :-

Soap & Skin Bubble: Josef L is the developer of this sketchup plugin. It can be applied for modeling curved surfaces, like the roof of a stadium. Initially, the plugin facilitates to produce a skin that is just a mesh formed with a closed edge loop.

It can be performed by clicking on the Skin button after choosing the relevant edges. Just put a subdivision value and press Enter. If the value is increased, the surface will be smoother if you “inflate” it.

Click on the following link to download it extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/soap-skin-bubble

Tools On Surface: fredo6 has developed this sketchup plugin. This toolset facilitates the users to employ several native tools like line, arc, circle, rectangle or offset but on curved surfaces. It’s very suitable when it is required to divide faces and utilize various materials.

Click on the following link to download it sketchucation.com/pluginstore?pln=ToolsOnSurface

Curviloft: This powerful plugin is developed by fredo6. It can produce complicated geometries from contours or lines in a more perfect way than the SketchUp sandbox tools. This tool can also be used to create organic models. It offers following three functions:

1. Loft by Spline: It can create a surface by attaching several contours with smooth splines. (A spline belongs to a curve divided into parts.)
2. Loft Along Path: It facilitates attaching several contours or 2D shapes along a specified guideline to generate a 3D shape.
3. Skinning: It produces a surface from joined contours or lines.

Click on the following link to download it extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/curviloft

JointPushPull: fredo6 is the developer of this plugin. With this plugin, it is possible to extrude curved surfaces. It is a modified of SketchUp’s native push and pull tools. It comprises a toolset that can extrude any curved surface with various parameters and styles. It also facilitates creating several extrusions at the same time.

Click on the following link to download it extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/jointpushpull

Flowify: Anders L has developed flowify, the most powerful plugins developed for SketchUp. It facilitates the users to bend any group or component made in SketchUp along a “target geometry”. The initial surface should be a “quad surface”, that means it is confined to four vertices.

Initially, align the preliminery surface perpendicular to the quad surface. Then, it’s an easy process of choosing both geometries and pressing the Flowify button.

Click on the following link to download it extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/flowify

Slicer: TIG has developed this exclusive plugin. It can be used for transforming models to the real world. It’s a tool is specifically created for digital fabrication — production by a computer numeric control (CNC) machine. The plugin facilitates you to slice a model into several pieces, provide them thicknesses, and make them ready for cutting.

For instance, you have a 3D model of a chair and it is necessary to make it for real. The plugin allows you to slice the model and set up the pieces to be cut with a CNC mill.

Some of the best and user-friendly SketchUp Plugins

In extension warehouse, there exist different types of sketchup extensions or plugins and among them, some are most popular. In this sketchup article, you will be familiar with some of the most popular sketchup plugins due to their extensive FPS toolbox.

1. Selection toys: Selection toys belong to a vital extension for all modelers and for any type of modeling to facilitate the users to filter objects in and out of a earlier selection. The users will be able to both select and deselect only edges, groups, components or entities which contain some specific properties like hidden, soft or smooth etc.

This extension can be used for several purposes like concealing bounding edges, optionally employing materials and more.

2. Selection Memory: This extension allows the users in recalling the selections created in SketchUp in order that people never miss any selection for any model or size.

3. Weld: This extension includes the loose edges into a soft curve to be chosen in a single mouse click. This extension can be utilized to avoid unnecessary popping up edges at the time of working with Push/Pull tool on traced geometry. In fact, much long arrays require additional usage of the extension and weld is best fit for this.

4. Eneroth Camera Memory: This extension can acquire camera views from one model to another that facilitate recalling the users without difficulty. It will be perfect for working among versions of models and copying scenes. When the both models are open, it acquires the view from the first model and select “Put to Memory” option and in the working model, the users will be able to choose “Retrieve from memory” point out the view.

5. Fredo Scale: Orientate the selection box around a series of objects and interactively employ several geometric transformations, like Scaling, Tapering, Stretching, Plane Shear, Twisting, Bending and Rotation.

6. Architect Tools: It belongs to a series of tools which can easily deal with large models containing buildings and terrain whereas the “flatten selection” tool allows to track the edges easily. There are two other tools like the “Contour Tool” and the “Project Down Tool”.

7. DROPGC: It is a shortcut for dropping objects to a contoured surface and DropGC develops the PathCopy extension and fall cleanly onto a piece of terrain.

8. ZORRO: This extension can be utilized to cut the fat and simplify the process to chop off geometry around the edges of the model that don’t require entering into components.

9. Wire Tool: This tool facilitates the users to draw physically perfect wires and ropes (catenary curves) among two points with only two clicks.

10. Instant Terrain: It is used to produce simplified terrains over complex terrains, drape terrain meshes over objects. Any objects will work: Faces, Groups, Components, Terrain Meshes; devoid of exploding them.

11. Loose to Groups: This allows the users to obtain the geometry by ungrouping it and organizing it in something useful.

Attribute Inspector 1.1, an exclusive sketchup plugin

It is a viewer for entity and model attributes. Attributes in SketchUp stand for supplimentary pieces of information which can be preserved with any entity like groups, components, scenes. As for instance, one can preserve a part number, unit price, weight or notes with an entity and read or change that information afterward. All attributes are contained in SketchUp's report feature.

It is a bidirectional communication system among JavaScript and the Ruby environment.

The purpose of this inspector is to retain the user interface small and very organized: Similar to SketchUp's inspector dialogs, it facilitates the users to choose one or more entities and displays their attributes. By editing the text fields, modifications can be done instantly to the entities.

Application: (Menu) Window → Attribute Inspector

The dialog demonstrates the attribute dictionaries of the drawing elements which are chosen currently. Another component can be chosen with the help of SketchUp's selection tool.

Press the +, ‒ buttons on the left side to include or eliminate a attribute dictionary, and press +, ‒ on the right side to include or eliminate an attribute.

To choose other types of entities, select the type from the dropdown and perform the following activities:

Drawing elements: Apply SketchUp's selection tool to choose one or more drawing elements in the model (edges, faces, groups.)

Definitions: Apply SketchUp's selection tool to select components/groups/images

Materials: By applying the materials browser and select a material. Attribute Editor will demonstrate the present material (could be not compatible with OS X because of API bug).

Layers: Apply the layer manager and verify the radio button of the layer.

Scenes: use the scenes manager and double-click the scene (to make it the current scene).
