Demo of sketchup slicer plugin

In this sketchup tutorial video, the demonstration is given for sketchup slicer plugin. Slicer plugin is developed by TIG.

With the Slicer Plugin for Sketchup, it is possible to cut your model into pieces. Just choose any solid object and slice it up into pieces. If any hole exists in your model, the plugin will not work. The plugin is very effective for repairing your model.

For application, just select a group of geometry and choose the axes to be sliced along together with the spacing and thickness of your slices.

Slicer facilitates the users to slice a model along the X,Y, and Z axes, together with custom axes. Export those slices to like a CNC router to develop these models in real life.

Besides, slicing your model, but if the flatten object is chosen, slicer will actually set all the different pieces it produces as components. These pieces can be exported to a CNC router if it is required to generate your objects in real life.

The extension can be downloaded from sketchUcation store.

To get more clear ideas, go through the following video tutorial.

Some of the best and user-friendly SketchUp Plugins

In extension warehouse, there exist different types of sketchup extensions or plugins and among them, some are most popular. In this sketchup article, you will be familiar with some of the most popular sketchup plugins due to their extensive FPS toolbox.

1. Selection toys: Selection toys belong to a vital extension for all modelers and for any type of modeling to facilitate the users to filter objects in and out of a earlier selection. The users will be able to both select and deselect only edges, groups, components or entities which contain some specific properties like hidden, soft or smooth etc.

This extension can be used for several purposes like concealing bounding edges, optionally employing materials and more.

2. Selection Memory: This extension allows the users in recalling the selections created in SketchUp in order that people never miss any selection for any model or size.

3. Weld: This extension includes the loose edges into a soft curve to be chosen in a single mouse click. This extension can be utilized to avoid unnecessary popping up edges at the time of working with Push/Pull tool on traced geometry. In fact, much long arrays require additional usage of the extension and weld is best fit for this.

4. Eneroth Camera Memory: This extension can acquire camera views from one model to another that facilitate recalling the users without difficulty. It will be perfect for working among versions of models and copying scenes. When the both models are open, it acquires the view from the first model and select “Put to Memory” option and in the working model, the users will be able to choose “Retrieve from memory” point out the view.

5. Fredo Scale: Orientate the selection box around a series of objects and interactively employ several geometric transformations, like Scaling, Tapering, Stretching, Plane Shear, Twisting, Bending and Rotation.

6. Architect Tools: It belongs to a series of tools which can easily deal with large models containing buildings and terrain whereas the “flatten selection” tool allows to track the edges easily. There are two other tools like the “Contour Tool” and the “Project Down Tool”.

7. DROPGC: It is a shortcut for dropping objects to a contoured surface and DropGC develops the PathCopy extension and fall cleanly onto a piece of terrain.

8. ZORRO: This extension can be utilized to cut the fat and simplify the process to chop off geometry around the edges of the model that don’t require entering into components.

9. Wire Tool: This tool facilitates the users to draw physically perfect wires and ropes (catenary curves) among two points with only two clicks.

10. Instant Terrain: It is used to produce simplified terrains over complex terrains, drape terrain meshes over objects. Any objects will work: Faces, Groups, Components, Terrain Meshes; devoid of exploding them.

11. Loose to Groups: This allows the users to obtain the geometry by ungrouping it and organizing it in something useful.

"Modeling a bag of chips: Native Commands vs. Extensions ”

Designing a simple pack of chips might sound easier using extensions but it can be also done by using Native Commands; here Aaron used both processes to know the easier one.

Aaron Dietzen this time comes with his new useful creation of importing and exporting via SketchUp Shop which is the newest thing for SketchUp users. This article will describe the whole process according to Aaron and his video tutorial where he used two different processes to design a simple pack of chips and there are also tutorial links given below.

About Aaron Dietzen:

Aaron Dietzen is mainly seen in various SketchUp Live or any of the Skill Builder videos or been on the SketchUp forum, that means Aaron is fond of SketchUp and serving as a SketchUp employee for two years with more than ten years in the software. He is more than just a simple Trimble employee; he is a true SketchUp fan. He spends his free time in designing things in SketchUp and loves adventurous works.

This time Aaron has decided to model something which is a little off the beaten path like a bag of chips using two kinds of tool; native and extensions.

Modeling a Bag of Chips using Native SketchUp commands:

The Sand box toolset is a great set of tools helping in modeling things like sandboxes, landscapes etc. and this time this toolset is used to draw a simple bag of chips. So in the beginning of the model, Aaron opened the SketchUp pro window and at the left side there is the Sandbox toolset; he took the Grade command to draw rectangles representing a bag of chips; next he took the Smooth Tool and as a circle worked on it. Using the Smooth Tool can help to lift the ground base either up or down; he just lifts up the middle portion to give it a loaded packet; next he worked on the edges, actually he at first made the half of the bag and next made exactly other half. These halves are lined perfectly aligned with each other and shaped well; he just copied the half used the move tool and using group tool he flipped the other one. The two halves connected properly without leaving any space between them; it should be keep in mind that a bag of chips is not truly rectangular shape so using sandbox toolset anyone can easily lift or align any corner or line or center to any direction perfectly. To give the sides the exact shape of the chips bag; he used select tool, move them towards center and used smoothing line, clicked triple to make it a whole group. Then he used the paint bucket tool, used Import tool and imports an image of formerly created chips bag and placed it.

Modeling a Bag of Chips using bunch of extensions:

This time Aaron has modeled the similar packet of chips but used some extensions also like: Soap Buble and Skin from Josef L, Vertex Tools from Thomthom and Fredo Tools from Fredo6. At first he started to draw a regular rectangle shape using normal Rectangle tool; next he selected the geometry and Click on the Generate Skin Button from the Soap Skin option; it actually create a new geometry upon the existing one on which he worked on. Then he selected Grade and clicked the Buble button he entered pressure towards enter that pushed the center of the object, the n he made the exact copy of this half and moved it aside. Next he flipped the other one and placed it upon the previous one; here the edges are aligned perfectly as the Soap Skin option does it already. Now he used Vertex tools to make the crumbles on the sides, smoothened the thing and can paint the whole model using many existed extensions an even can give a name also.

How to convert sketchup scenes into layout viewports

Sketchup is applied to make scenes and styles to arrange a model to proper layout. In this exclusive sketchup video tutorial, you will learn how to utilize those scenes to generate viewports in layout as well as align your model efficiently among scenes.
With layout, it becomes easier to accomplish all the view-related tasks (styles, viewpoints, section planes, scenes, layers etc. from inside LayOut and to apply SketchUp primarily for the “raw” modeling.
There is another useful command like center scene inside viewport to simplify the task.
As soon as you get the scenes in your model set, inside Layout go to File>Insert and navigate to your sketchup file in the browser. Click on your blank paper in Layout and a new viewport will be seen. It is possible to modify the viewport to your scene by right clicking on the new viewport and scroll through to the scenes in the menu.

Some useful tips on sketchup axis

In this exclusive sketchup video tutorial, Justin Geis briefly explains the significance of modeling along the axes in sketchup. The sketchup axes can be used to settle your inferencing, align the scale tool, generate location based models and lots other.

Drawing axes are vital to understanding how Google SketchUp functions. The drawing axes in sketchUp are used to determine where you are (and where you want to go) in 3D space.

Axes help in creating modeling in SketchUp rapid, perfect, and comparatively intuitive.

In sketchup the global axis lines belong to the red, green and blue lines which are usually demonstrated in the drawing window. The point where these lines are intersected is known as the origin. The red line stands for the X-axis, green for the Y-axis and blue for the Z-axis. The Z-axis is the vertical one. Components obtain their own axes. The solid axis lines remain to the positive direction whereas the dotted axis lines remain on the negative side.

How to convert sketchup faces to SVG file for laser cutting

This is a nice presentation from Matthias Wandel for sketchup users. The video sheds light on how to apply the FlightsOfIdeas sketchup plugin to produce SVG files for laser cutting any sketchup model.

This plugin facilitates the sketchup users to choose sketchup faces from their 3D models and export the outlines of these faces to a scalable vector graphics (SVG) file for laser cutting. The plugin simplifies the process for exporting the 3D models to 2D vector graphics.

The plugin allows to apply editors like Inkscape (open source) as well as make 2D layouts for laser cutting, simple CNC milling, scrollsaws etc.

The plugin contains the following drawbacks :-

To set up the plugin, just take out the files from the zip file sketchup-svg-outlines-plugin-0.99.zip and provide them in your plugins directory. On Windows, it is done by opening the zip file (double click), choosing all of the files, and then dragging them to your SketchUp plugins directory.
