"Breaking SketchUp model into Parts for 3D Printing"

SketchUp specialists Aidan Chopra has discussed a process which is simple enough for users who want to break their SketchUp models into parts for 3D printing.

While doing 3D printing in SktechUp, users need to run into the need to spilt the model into parts. There are though some ideas are big to fit into the 3D printer’s build volume but other ideas want to be 3D printed in a rainbow of colored plastic or sometimes needs to be split to make it easy to print.

Almost everything can designed in 3D with SketchUp and who have splattered in 3D drawing or are interested to learn the basics of design, SketchUp for Dummies has made it faster and easier to learn the ropes of a powerful, user-friendly tool that bring life into the design ideas. Users can get guidance here from creating a basic 3D model to showcase their work through 3D print or animation, literally everything in SketchUp that can help in anywhere like from redesigning the house to mocking up the future great invention. More than that, SketchUp’s vast usability has gotten very wide success as a tool that even non-designers can also make basic drawings; there are also many expert tips from former SketchUp product director Aidan Chopra and co-author Rebecca Huehls that help to draw and access SketchUp.

Aidan has described a process which will help users to cut the SketchUp model in the right time and right way.

Place to cut the SketchUp model:

while subdividing a SketchUp model into printable parts, always users need to find the right place to start and to think what to do with the seams. Like if users want to go to sand, paint and finish the model then can do it and cut at any place but sanding and finishing is a huge work to do while it will become much easier if anyone make cuts and seams look like they are international parts of model. Another good place to hide a cut is at a change in elevation, curvature or color; if users place a seam where the surface of a part is interrupted already, it will not be noticeable enough.

It is a good idea to pick something around us that is made of plastic and find the seams where the parts can combine together, and if that type of seam can be imitated people will notice and accept it faster. It will be seen as a realistic one and people will think that the 3D printed part came from a factory. If the constructions are large, then the only option may be to establish a grid and cut into build-volume-size blocks.

Process to cut the SketchUp model:

  • elect the group and make a new group around it where the original one will become a subgroup.
  • Then work inside the new group, create geometry in the shape of the cut.
  • After that, make new geometry into its own group.
  • Select Cutter Object> choose Edit> Intersect Faces with Context.
  • Inside each group, use Explode to stick the intersection lines, cutting object and base object.
  • Move back out to the master group and make copies.
  • In each copy, open the group for editing and erase unnecessary parts.
  • Run CleanUp3 on the new parts and use Solid Inspector2 to check accidental holes.
  • Place the parts back together as lines should be

"Adobe Dimension 2.0 is 3D for Graphic Designers”

Trimble Navigation is very excited to join with Adobe in announcing that native SketchUp interoperability has been added to Adobe Dimension 2.0.

Trimble Navigation is so excited and happy to share their announcement with everyone about their new ways of working with Adobe with using it. Here are some information about Adobe Max and Adobe Dimension 2.0.

Adobe Max: With Adobe everything is about the design process and their designs are being published at their annual creative conference called Adobe MAX. This year they have made it more impressive as the software giant is currently at its most improved with a focus on virtual reality, artificial intelligence and accommodating new programs to encourage the current generation of creative people. This huge seminar includes about 12000 creatives including influencers, guests, designers and developers from all over the world, for what was the biggest output the conference has ever seen. It was a grand opportunity to explore ideas, learn from experienced persons and influencers; besides that it became a new discussion platform to start a new era of art and technology for starting something fresh and new.

Adobe Dimension 2.0.: This New Year has been a wild ride like aggressively expel new features and abilities, engaging with Adobe’s user base and hearing peoples’ stories of exploring the new Dimension and upgrading new partnerships for Adobe across the wider 3D ecosystem. All of this has been included in this year’s Adobe MAX where they are launching the biggest update of Dimension so far which is Dimension v2.0 in front of the world’s creators, storytellers and our best friends.

Adobe Dimension v1.0 had come in the market a year before and it showed the world a new type of creative space, it is the one that brought the macrocosms of 2D graphic design and 3D modeling together into one simple tool. Dimension became an important tool for traditional Illustrator and Photoshop users as it gave a spatial context to classic graphic design work such as product packaging, product photo shoots and apparel design. For architects and interior designs, Adobe Dimension offered a new method to work with presentation renderings while for artists it helped them by blurring the line between 2D and 3D.

After releasing of the new version Dimension v2.0 the whole Adobe become very busy; they have improved the interoperability between Dimension and the rest of Adobe’s Creative Cloud applications. Now this new release can natively reads SketchUp models with 100% fidelity so all the designs will now become more lively and beautiful than ever. 3D working will add more vibrant in the designs in every field, users now can create more new and creative designs for their clients and customers. People who are already subscriber of Adobe Creative Cloud can have the full release of Dimension to use and can also share their Dimension projects on the SketchUp 3D Warehouse with the #dimension for further share and use.

"Creating Walkthroughs in SketchUp”

SketchUp users should create the walkthroughs in SketchUp models as it will help to move the model continuously even with turns and corners by giving it smooth steps.

About SketchUp: SketchUp or Google SketchUp is mainly a 3D modeling computer program that is used for a broad range of drawing applications used by architects, interior designer, landscape architects, civil and mechanical engineers, film and video game designers also. SketchUp can be getting as a freeware version named SketchUp Make and a paid version with many more extra benefits called SketchUp Pro. SketchUp is software from Trimble Company and there is an online library of free model congregations and 3D Warehouse to which users can add other models; besides that, the program has drawing layout functionality with variable ‘styles’, supports third-party ‘plug-in’ programs hosted on the Extension Warehouse to supply other abilities and enables placement of its models in Google Earth.

As SketchUp users are most of architects, designers, builders, makers and engineers etc. who works hard to give a nice shape to our physical world, they need great tools to do the work. SketchUp is in mission to bring their best to produce some great tools for drawing as drawing is the key thing of the SketchUp users. They draw to search ideas, to identify the things and to show other people their work that they do with love and love to build; SketchUp understands it truly and trying to improve their software day by day.

Aidan Chopra was a beloved member of the SketchUp team for 10 years; he is the creator of SketchUp Blog where SketchUp members and professionals share their new designs and tells some tips and tricks to design various designs that help users a lot. This Blog has attracted huge number of people and helps them to know more about SketchUp tools and extensions, moreover that users can now easily use SketchUp in their everyday life. Aidan also taught countless classes on SketchUp, he authored the SketchUp for Dummies Book.

Walkthrough is a really great method to use scenes as here users have to pretend as walking or flying through their SketchUp model; just need to set up the scenes continually and here they can add a seamless tour without messing around with the navigation tools. This setup is very easy to use while walking and talking at the same time, so here are some tips about simulating a person walking or flying through the model wit scenes:

  • Adjusting the field of view:
Users can adjust their field of view for interior animations and it follows some steps- at first the camera has to see in a wider “see” area by setting the field of view to 60 degrees. If they want to adjust the exterior view, they just need to try a field of view that is between 30 and 45 degrees.

  • Scenes should not be too far apart:
Adding scenes in the SketchUp model gives the model more lively attractions and it will also make the model more attractive.

  • Adding scenes at equal distance intervals:
It is good to add scenes in an equal distance as SketchUp only allows users to control the scene transition timing for all the scenes in one time.

  • Always set the animation settings in the Model info Dialog box:
The users can set the scenes delay to 0 seconds that will help to continue the animation at every scene and it will gives the audiences time to look around and notice every scene in detail.

  • Slide around corners:
While setting up a walk animation, users can have an easy and certain way to turn corners without making it to technical. Generally the trick is to add a scene just short of where the users want to turn like a few feet ahead of the doorway. The reason is to angle the view into the turn slightly and then set the next scene just past the turn, close to the inside and facing the new view; this whole technique makes the model like turning corners naturally.

"Curic Space for SketchUp Function description”

SketchUp Extension Curic Space is designed to help users to space objects inside the models quickly and users can use this extension for making copies of single objects etc.

This article is about the new SketchUp Plugin, Curic Space is an extension that gives users many options for spacing objects equally within SketchUp.

Curic Space: The simplest function of this extension is to choose multiple different objects, then selecting the axis with which users like the objects to be spaced and users can give any value to adjust the spacing. The entering of space values can be done as long as users don’t click out of the tool; they can also space across multiple axes by clicking on a new axis and typing in a value. Besides all of this, this extension also has an object duplication tool that can be activated in two simple steps: at first users need to click on a single instance of an object and then click on the Curic Space icon.

This extension does three things which are:

  • Creating Copies of Single Objects
  • Space objects based on the object centers
  • Space objects based on object origins
Copying objects: Users can create copies of objects with Curic space by selecting a single object and clicking the curic space button. If user selects only one object, the extension will ask the number of copies want to create and after creating the copies, all are inserted at the same point that can only space out by Curic space.

Spacing objects based on centres: The following extension allows users to neglect objects based on object centers where the center is found as pr the selected objects, then space every along a selected direction. Users can type in a numerical value and press the enter key to space every object; also users can enter a different value and press enter key to put different spacings.
Spacing objects based on origin: Curic space also has the option where users can space objects based on the object origin which can be useful while dealing with objects which are not the same width.

"Downloading free Textures from Poliigon and using them in SketchUp/VRAY Renderings”

Textures add the realistic look in any model and Poliigon’s website is full of different textures which will increase the rendering view in SketchUp 3D models or in Vray.

Justin Geis: Justin Geis is the founder of The SketchUp Essentials and started using SketchUp while he was working as a general contractor in 2008 and after using it he found that SketchUp is extremely powerful that he just started to use it in his personal works also. Then he started The SketchUp Essentials as a place where he could share his ideas of using SketchUp easily through some tutorials and tips to help other users controlling the power of 3D Modeling in everyday lives.

In today’s article we will discuss about an online source that is contained of textures which can be used in any 3D models and renderings. There are many different websites which can also be used to download textures to use both in the SketchUp models, as well as for some programs like Vray, Unreal Engine and many more. This is a guidance to help the users in downloading and importing materials from Polligon.com into every SketchUp model, besides that there are some tips for setting the materials up within Vray for really creating more realistic renderings.

These free textures can get from www.poliigon.com , where users need to go on the top of the page to click the Sign Up button and it is absolutely free of cost website. After signing up, users can find there premium textures that can be purchased access to, as well as there are some great free textures that can be downloaded. Next they will find the texture stab, from where they have to go down to click on “Free textures” option; after clicking on this it will show a list of all the free textures available through Polligon where are list of wonderful materials to work.

Here is an example of texture-

SketchUp or Google SketchUp is mainly a3D modeling computer program that is used for a broad range of drawing applications used by architects, interior designer, landscape architects, civil and mechanical engineers, film and video game designers also. SketchUp is a worth useful software for its ease of use, it can be downloaded or installed o computer and right after that user can work on it. Though SketchUp can easily handle but still there are some sides where people will find some difficulties and lots of solve also are there like YouTube tutorials upon SketchUp or visiting SketchUp website or search Google etc. But people will get confused to have lots of information from different places upon one thing so there should a proper place or website where all the answers can be found.

Plaster 17: When users will select this texture they will get a preview window that will show the material and its look while rendering. It also shows a list of different maps that can be downloaded such as normal maps, reflections etc. They also have a pretty worthy set of free textures and one of the nice things about them is that they have different maps which users may need to link up various things like normal maps to coarsen the surface or reflection maps to make the rendered reflections look better and more. Users can select very high resolutions also but it should keep in mind that though higher resolutions look more realistic but SketchUp may face some trouble with working them. After downloading the file, users can unzip it and place the materials in their file; next it need to bring into Vray by opening up the Asset Editor, then go to the Material List and click the “Add Material” button at the bottom of the page and select “Generic”. From here, users can add the maps into Vray material, clicking on the right arrow button will help to expand the window off to the right where they can add texture to this material by selecting the little box next to “Diffuse” and finding the color map. This option will add the texture image to the material and going in the material section, the size of the material can adjust; also adding different maps from the material it become more realistic.

"Design parts in SketchUp to connect for 3D printing”

SketchUp models are suitable for 3D printing but it only can happen when the parts of any model are assembled together, there are different ways to assemble those parts.

In the previous tutorials of Sketch Up, Aidan and Rebecca have shown us the way to cut Sketch Up model into parts but the matter is now to assemble them in a way for printing them. There are many other strategies and features in SketchUp like mechanical or else to help in building into the model to assemble the parts together. Aidan and Rebecca are going to show the users through different processes and here is a brief discussion on it.

Tolerance in SketchUp: It is the difference between the sizes of users’ part in SketchUp and the size of the part produced by their 3D printer. Suppose a user has drawn a 10mm cube in SketchUp and printed it, none of the sizes of the printed cube will be shown exactly 10mm; though these are very small differences like a few tenths of a millimeter more r less. But they can create problems if their 3D printed parts have to connect with the parts that already exist in the real world. That’s why the manufacturer of the 3D printers gives a unique number for the machine’s tolerance which may be in either plus or minus value. This value is called the Maximum variation for that machine and users both need to be aware while working.

Tolerance in SketchUp: Clearance is like an extra space for parts to slide past one another but users may face a little difficulty while installing similar size peg in a similar sized hole as they will not go together. The peg and the hole will not fit properly with each other in SketchUp but in real world they will not react like this as there the peg needs to connect with friction. The exterior of the peg is similar as the exterior of the hole that the friction between them will keep the peg from veer going in if the fit is too perfect for them. In that case, users need to add a small amount of space called clearance which will help the two parts to slide past each other; the amount of clearance depends on the exact movement of the part.

Glue in SketchUp: Glue is the universal way to stick things but it is also the weakest and most unreliable way as it has very little strength o keep the things tighter for long.

  • The plastics which are used in 3D prints defined by the names ABS, PLA, PVA, nylon and PETT; all these plastics need a special glue to stick and the glues have to order online.
  • Biodegradable starch plastics consists a crystalline structure that doesn’t go well with liquid superglue which stays liquid and move unexpectedly across the surface of the part.
  • Instead of glue, users can use epoxy which is though a messy stuff but will stick to anything.
  • No glue can stick to the flexible materials for 3D printers so to attach parts, a process called thermal welding.

Snap fittings in SketchUp: These are properly designed to pop the models together after the parts come off the printer and as these are removable so users can change out many parts of the model as per design. In SketchUp, snap fittings are created by two general steps: 1) creating the tongue with the Line and Push/Pull tools; 2) creating a matching capture point on the opposing part.

Press Fit in SketchUp: A press fit is the very little clearance between the two parts while designing and when the parts are pressed together forcibly, friction keeps the joint together without any extra hardware or glue. To make a press fit, the Offset tool is used to create an outer lip on one side of the connection and an inner lip on other side.

Bolts, Screws and Hardware in SketchUp: The strongest connection between 3D printed parts is holding together with metal hardware and these connections are great for things that are more than just prototypes. While integrating hardware into the design, include hardware in the SketchUp model as it will take measurements of the parts users need to use and model them in SketchUp. Then save the components in the component library for using them in further models.

"Quantities and Cost estimates with Quantifier Pro in SketchUp"

SketchUp’s Quantifier Pro is a brand new extension and amazing extension that is used to quantify and help to apply pricing to things within the SketchUp model.

Quantifier Pro: SketchUp 2016 or the newer version is suitable for Quantifier Pro and it is also compatible with both Mac and PC. This is the ultimate tool to get instant quantity and cost information from the SketchUp model. It has various features like:

  • Selecting the objects in the model will instantly show the total length, area, volume, weight and cost
  • After using the model all the reports are model-driven and automatically update while the model will change.
  • Fully Customizable Component Reports are found there which will show length, width, height, projected area, surface area, volume, weight, cost and many more things.
  • There are also detailed cost reports.
  • Instant Material Report will show the surface area of all materials in the model
  • Assign re-usable cost rules are shown by layer, material, object or to the whole model
  • Cost Inspector tool will show total cost calculation for the selected object to verify accuracy
  • In Windows, Microsoft Excel is used to share unified cost data across many SketchUp models
  • This extension also supports many languages and international currency
  • There are full control of units and accuracy shown in reports
  • If Profile Builder 3 is added with this extension, then it will be even more colorful.
This Plugin cost $79 alone and if it is bundled with Profile Builder 3 then it will cost 25% off of each extension

Functions of Quantifier Pro: This particular extension is designed to help in quantifying and price in different things within the SketchUp models; at first the users have to select different objects within the model and then apply cost data to them within quantifier. Within quantifier, users can select different objects and can be viewed within the quantifier dialog. It should be kept in mind that while using quantifier, users have to put the objects on the same material on their own layers; as an example if one is going to quantify a block wall then he/she will try to put all the block wall objects on a block wall layer. After this, this extension will allow the users to apply various cost properties to the objects on the layer. Moreover that, this extension can be used to apply costs to objects by other units within the model like length; and it also works with profiles that have not been created with Profile Builder or by the users themselves.

Users can also apply costs based on SketchUp materials also and this will calculate the cost based on materials that have been applied to front side faces only to avoid double counting back side materials. It is also possible to directly overrule the cost added with an object using the object opinion and while modeling an object that are punching a bunch of holes it; then it is better to model that as standard geometry rather than a profile builder assembly as they actually calculates using the bounds of an object. Finally besides all of these one can create reports within quantifier that can either viewed within SketchUp or can be exported to Excel, theoretically one an import cost data from an Excel spreadsheet also.

How to speed up your modeling in sketchup with v-ray proxies

In this sketchup v-ray video tutorial, you will learn how to use v-ray proxies in skethup models to produce superior quality renderings with high polygon models.

Rendering in sketchup becomes complicated since sketchup can’t deal with high polygon models. So, if there are more faces and geometries in the model, the modeling process become slower since sketchup does not handle all the geometries efficiently.

With high polygon, high detail model inside your sketchup model, it becomes difficult to produce realistic rendering. But v-ray contains a tool known as proxies that facilitates to export the objects out of your model and substitute them with a low polygon preview model.

When rendering starts, v-ray will reference those files called meshes externally devoid of showing them in your model.

To learn the detail process, go through the following video tutorial.

Cube Cities are a unique thinking

Greg Angevine is the founder of Cube Cities and with his innovative team he has made some unique featured cities which are different from the normal thoughts. He has spent a lot of years in his career to find some idea from some of the largest and most elaborately detailed cities all over the world. From his survey over this various kind of cities he has made finally very useful, floor-level visualizations for the three-dimensional industry and it is full of uniqueness. This article will throw the light on Greg’s innovative ideas and works.

About Cube Cities: It is the name of the company, given by Greg and it was founded in the year 2010 worked on creating and expanding a floor-level imagination platform which is reflects the transparency in the real estate markets. Before the arriving of Cube Cities it was not possible to fast visualize real estate data in 3D and now it became very effective for the real estate organizations. Cube Cities has changed the slow graphic of the real estate market and has brought a huge amount of interest for the common people.

Reason to be in the real estate modeling industry: Though Cube Cities is a full time and evolved company in real estate industry but before it Greg had worked with a commercial real estate agency in a research capacity that gave him the experience. Working with the real estate agency gave him the experience of the sources of firm and maintaining the data, also provided with the information about the techniques by which generally brokers grasp the data of produce researches to make a good communication in trending markets. Everyone is knowledgeable about the nature of the commercial real estate; it is very competitive field and has so much high-quality challenging data, to overthrow this Greg and his team has a build a method. The method can help users to weight their data and offer them different complementary tools to build their own visualizations. This is a new and developed technology that can create thousands of floor-level building models quickly and help to connect with users and become a useful important 3D mapping technology.

3D modeling is best in the real estate modeling industry: Real estate field is all about the location and views that can leave an effect in the construction process and give the project a well and furnished look. As 3D modeling can highlight each and every detail clearly so by using it modelers can highlight the main parts of their model and give the model a lively look.

Most challenging city model: Greg has designed many famous and big cities all around the world but according to him among them the most challenging and interesting model is Manhattan. This city is full of beauty in structures of every building; this city is consisted with various urban developments that give the city so much thickness that can’t find any other city. SketchUp has detailed the diversity in the buildings and made the iconic skyscrapers which are better than any procreated process. SktechUp is the only solution to create all kind of new and developed cities all over the world.

Things that SketchUp solves in a city model: SketchUp gives its users the ability to use 3D buildings with perfect geometry and high-quality photographic textures in any application. It is not easy to get the right a3erial imagery for building photorealistic models though it allows using the camera kind of features everywhere. A team of SketchUp modelers maintains a good number of photographers in selected cities which help to create high-quality models in any content.

Other extensions used in Cube Cities with SketchUp: Though SketchUp is an all-rounder tool but Greg is using software named Cesium, a mapping partner of SketchUp that emigrates the SketchUp models into it using SketchUp’s glTF export extension. Cesium is used in case of working with many SketchUp models loaded with unique javascript calls and can bear the extra load of 3D Tile Server that improve the loading speed and performance.

Besides this, the Cube Cities’ team has also worked with Matterport; this software that helps to see inside a building and tour for examining the original conditions of a space. Matterport also make the Cube Cities technology a perfect way to join floors or windows of a SketchUp model to virtual tour.

Future plans of Cube Cities: According to Greg, Cube Cities can be used to find indoor location or the location where the floor or partial area of a floor or other can be found. Besides that it can identify the problematic area or part of a building and solve them and provide public safety regulations also. In addition it is said that Greg is very much excited to see the combination and coordination of Cube Cities’ technology with SketchUp, Cesium and different mobile devices. All of them are different from each other but can become a huge versatile platform for the real estate industry.
