GOING FROM SKETCHUP TO UNITY USING PBR MATERIALS

SketchUp users are pro in creating different textures and models using various textures from the Extension Warehouse; similarly they can go from SketchUp to Unity with PBR materials.

This article will clearly describes about PBR materials and the way of going back on the PBR to Unity 5.6 pipeline workflow for SketchUp through some easy steps.

About SketchUp: SketchUp or Google SketchUp is mainly a 3D modeling computer program that is used for a broad range of drawing applications used by architects, interior designer, landscape architects, civil and mechanical engineers, film and video game designers also. SketchUp can be getting as a freeware version named SketchUp Make and a paid version with many more extra benefits called SketchUp Pro. SketchUp is software from Trimble Company and there is an online library of free model congregations and 3D Warehouse to which users can add other models; besides that, the program has drawing layout functionality with variable ‘styles’, supports third-party ‘plug-in’ programs hosted on the Extension Warehouse to supply other abilities and enables placement of its models in Google Earth.

PBR: PBR or Physically Based Rendering is a method of shading and rendering that provides a more perfect representation of how light interacts with the surfaces. PBR is also referred to as Physically Based Shading depending on the aspect of pipeline being discussed; PBR is usually specific to shading concepts and specific to rendering and lighting. Though, both these terms describe the process of representing assets from a physically accurate standpoint.

SketchUV: It is an UV mapping tool which is used to draw spherical, cylindrical, planer, tube, box, quad shapes and can do save, load, export and import. SketchUV is designed to be easier to use and UV mapping in general takes some time to get use to. The features are noted here:
  • It can draw planar, cylindrical and spherical UV projections at any orientation
  • It can be used in Box mapping
  • Tube mapping- it can be a great tool for objects created using follow-me tool
  • It can do Quad face mapping
  • It can also move, rotate and scale UVs
  • It can draw Triangulate geometry and remove distorted textures
  • It also save UVs and Load UVs where change materials and maintain UVs
  • It can export and import UVs using third party UV mapping software

Steps to go from SketchUp to Unity using PBR material:

  • Before beginning the process users need to install SketchUV extension for SketchUp from Extension Warehouse.
  • Then took the PBR textures and apply it on the model.
  • At last use the Pixplant for seamless texture and render map creation as this is powerful and easy to use.
  • For detailed process go towwww.sketchucation.com

"Review of Eneroth Tool Memory”

About SketchUp: SketchUp or Google SketchUp is mainly a3D modeling computer program that is used for a broad range of drawing applications used by architects, interior designer, landscape architects, civil and mechanical engineers, film and video game designers also. As SketchUp users are most of architects, designers, builders, makers and engineers etc. who works hard to give a nice shape to our physical world, they need great tools to do the work. SketchUp is in mission to bring their best to produce some great tools for drawing as drawing is the key thing of the SketchUp users. They draw to search ideas, to identify the things and to show other people their work that they do with love and love to build; SketchUp understands it truly and trying to improve their software day by day.

About Extension Warehouse:

It is an online resource with various plug-ins developed made especially for SketchUp and these extensions help to add some special tools and features to SketchUp. These extensions can be found for any particular application like drawing or 3D printing and some industry specified tools for architecture, interior design, construction and many more. So basically in this Extension Warehouse people can do the following things:
  • Users can search extensions by name or as per the functionality.
  • They can also install various extensions with a single click of a button.
  • Or users can also control all the extensions from easy-to-use location in the My Extension page.

Eneroth Tool Memory:

It is like a Cycle that like used tools with a new twist. Cycles open windows with the keys Alt+Tab in windows, this plugin can be used to cycle recently in SketchUp. Eneroth Tool Memory plugin can speed up highly and simplifies the modeling process; this plugin is primarily aimed at skilled professional users who look for ways to improve their work. Moreover that, this plugin is as most useful for tools that users use too little to have a shortcut for but vey regular after using them.

Setup of Eneroth Tool Memory:

After installing the plugin, it will ask for some manual setup to work which cannot be done in automated way but can be done in just few minutes:
  • Users at first need to open the Shortcut settings from the follow path: Window> Preferences> Shortcuts.
  • Then users have to organize a shortcut which is Ctlr+Spacebar and follow the path: Extensions> Eneroth Tool Memory> Cycle Tools. Users can also choose a modifier key other than Ctrl in Windows or Command in Mac, then the following path will be: Extensions> Eneroth Tool Memory> Set Modifier Key and select that key.
  • Besides the above two options, users can also set up a concur shortcut including Shift; just as Ctrl+Shift+Space, Extensions> Eneroth Tool Memory> Cycle Tools Backwards.
Exclude tools: The version 1.1.0 of Eneroth Tool Memory is the stratpoint of every user that can specify tools to exclude and it can be useful when users don’t want the tool stack to get filled with the tools which already have shortcuts. So they need to create a text file in the plugin’s directory, and then have to write the tool names which must be similar in the tool stack and separated by line breaks.

Users should keep in mind that Certain tools are not added to the tool stack; like the Texture Positioning Tool must be started from the context menu of a face. This tool can be activated without a reference to a face but it wouldn’t be useful and it will not act as a tool. While Camera tools such as Orbit and Zoom Window are not added by default as they can be added optionally though there will be risk in the stack.

It is a wonderful tool for developers as it can create and activate new tool objects than re-using existing objects. Tools whose constructors need parameters will not be reminded by this plugin as these tools are actually designed to be initialized in a certain way. So users make sure that the class of their tools can be supported by Eneroth Tool Memory and initialized without arguments.

"Importing SketchUp Textures & Creating Custom Materials”

SketchUp Texture libarery is full of different textures that need to use in the SketchUp models; but there are some textures not available, users can create their own and make Custom Materials.

Though SketchUp has a quite nice order of materials built into it but it doesn’t have all the materials that people want; this is a description of a tutorial that will help the users to learn more about importing favorite SketchUp textures and turning them into new materials which are used in the models.

Creating Custom Material Libraries in SketchUp is depended on understanding the nature of materials within SketchUp; so the first thing the users need to know is about the original images themselves which may be in the JPEG format or so on are not really SketchUp materials. Originally they are the images that can load in order for creating these materials; the original material file is a file that can be created within SketchUp that specifies about the material. For creating this material file, users need to start off by making a custom material that can be downloaded from many places like SketchUp Texture Club, CG Textures, and Textures.com etc. The process will be started form clicking the plus button which is in the upper right hand corner that will create a new material, if anyone wants to base it on a repeating texture image then users can click on go down option and check the box for “use texture image,”; next users have to find the related image to create a texture. Next the image has to resized and repositioned in the model, after completing it the material will be created and need to rename it and save it in the database.

Importing SketchUp textures and creating Custom Materials:
  • At first, users need to find a SketchUp texture to use; SketchUp texture is a great place to find a huge number of free textures. While CGtextures extension is used as a replacement of SketchUptexture extension earlier which are not all super clean but has an awesome library to look through.
  • Then users have to click on Paint Bucket Tool that will show the Materials window pop-up. Or they can go to the Window tab and select Materials from the drop-down list.
  • Next click the Create Material button from the Material window.
  • After that the Create Material window will pop-up; it will help to import the SketchUp textures. To import the textures users need to click the Import Image option in the Texture Editor section, here the texture image will get uploaded and a preview of it will be seen in the upper left hand corner. The Color Editor section is used to adjust the material’s color without editing it in an external program and reimport it. Te Colorize option is there in the Texture Editor section which will turns texture to black and white and then puts the color overlay on top. The Texture Scale & Lock option in the Texture Editor section will help to adjust the scale of the SketchUp texture. The Reset Color option will help to put the colors from beginning if anything turns bad.
  • Next click Ok; after that the custom material will show up in the SketchUp material library. Select it, take the Paint Bucket tool and paint it.

      "Creating Walkthroughs in SketchUp”

SketchUp users should create the walkthroughs in SketchUp models as it will help to move the model continuously even with turns and corners by giving it smooth steps.

Aidan Chopra was a beloved member of the SketchUp team for 10 years; he is the creator of SketchUp Blog where SketchUp members and professionals share their new designs and tells some tips and tricks to design various designs that help users a lot. This Blog has attracted huge number of people and helps them to know more about SketchUp tools and extensions, moreover that users can now easily use SketchUp in their everyday life. Aidan also taught countless classes on SketchUp, he authored the SketchUp for Dummies Book.

Walkthrough is a really great method to use scenes as here users have to pretend as walking or flying through their SketchUp model; just need to set up the scenes continually and here they can add a seamless tour without messing around with the navigation tools. This setup is very easy to use while walking and talking at the same time, so here are some tips about simulating a person walking or flying through the model wit scenes:

      • Adjusting the field of view:
Users can adjust their field of view for interior animations and it follows some steps- at first the camera has to see in a wider “see” area by setting the field of view to 60 degrees. If they want to adjust the exterior view, they just need to try a field of view that is between 30 and 45 degrees.

      • Scenes should not be too far apart:
Adding scenes in the SketchUp model gives the model more lively attractions and it will also make the model more attractive.

      • Adding scenes at equal distance intervals:
It is good to add scenes in an equal distance as SketchUp only allows users to control the scene transition timing for all the scenes in one time.

      • Always set the animation settings in the Model info Dialog box:
The users can set the scenes delay to 0 seconds that will help to continue the animation at every scene and it will gives the audiences time to look around and notice every scene in detail.

      • Slide around corners:
While setting up a walk animation, users can have an easy and certain way to turn corners without making it to technical. Generally the trick is to add a scene just short of where the users want to turn like a few feet ahead of the doorway. The reason is to angle the view into the turn slightly and then set the next scene just past the turn, close to the inside and facing the new view; this whole technique makes the model like turning corners naturally.

"Downloading free Textures from Poliigon and using them in SketchUp/VRAY Renderings”

Textures add the realistic look in any model and Poliigon’s website is full of different textures which will increase the rendering view in SketchUp 3D models or in Vray.

Justin Geis: Justin Geis is the founder of The SketchUp Essentials and started using SketchUp while he was working as a general contractor in 2008 and after using it he found that SketchUp is extremely powerful that he just started to use it in his personal works also. Then he started The SketchUp Essentials as a place where he could share his ideas of using SketchUp easily through some tutorials and tips to help other users controlling the power of 3D Modeling in everyday lives.

In today’s article we will discuss about an online source that is contained of textures which can be used in any 3D models and renderings. There are many different websites which can also be used to download textures to use both in the SketchUp models, as well as for some programs like Vray, Unreal Engine and many more. This is a guidance to help the users in downloading and importing materials from Polligon.com into every SketchUp model, besides that there are some tips for setting the materials up within Vray for really creating more realistic renderings.

These free textures can get from www.poliigon.com , where users need to go on the top of the page to click the Sign Up button and it is absolutely free of cost website. After signing up, users can find there premium textures that can be purchased access to, as well as there are some great free textures that can be downloaded. Next they will find the texture stab, from where they have to go down to click on “Free textures” option; after clicking on this it will show a list of all the free textures available through Polligon where are list of wonderful materials to work.

Here is an example of texture-

SketchUp or Google SketchUp is mainly a3D modeling computer program that is used for a broad range of drawing applications used by architects, interior designer, landscape architects, civil and mechanical engineers, film and video game designers also. SketchUp can be getting as a freeware version named SketchUp Make and a paid version with many more extra benefits called SketchUp Pro. They draw to search ideas, to identify the things and to show other people their work that they do with love and love to build; SketchUp understands it truly and trying to improve their software day by day. SketchUp is a worth useful software for its ease of use, it can be downloaded or installed o computer and right after that user can work on it. Though SketchUp can easily handle but still there are some sides where people will find some difficulties and lots of solve also are there like YouTube tutorials upon SketchUp or visiting SketchUp website or search Google etc. But people will get confused to have lots of information from different places upon one thing so there should a proper place or website where all the answers can be found.

Plaster 17: When users will select this texture they will get a preview window that will show the material and its look while rendering. It also shows a list of different maps that can be downloaded such as normal maps, reflections etc. They also have a pretty worthy set of free textures and one of the nice things about them is that they have different maps which users may need to link up various things like normal maps to coarsen the surface or reflection maps to make the rendered reflections look better and more. Users can select very high resolutions also but it should keep in mind that though higher resolutions look more realistic but SketchUp may face some trouble with working them. After downloading the file, users can unzip it and place the materials in their file; next it need to bring into Vray by opening up the Asset Editor, then go to the Material List and click the “Add Material” button at the bottom of the page and select “Generic”. From here, users can add the maps into Vray material, clicking on the right arrow button will help to expand the window off to the right where they can add texture to this material by selecting the little box next to “Diffuse” and finding the color map. This option will add the texture image to the material and going in the material section, the size of the material can adjust; also adding different maps from the material it become more realistic.

"Highlights of some amazing 3D Printed Projects in 2019”

The 3D printing technology allows any kind of design to be brought to life which releases architects from the limitations of standard construction.

3D printing or additive manufacturing is way of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital life. The creation or making of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes and in this process, an object is made by laying down successive layers of material till the object is created. Each of these layers can be visible as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object. So basically 3D printing is the opposite of subtractive manufacturing which is cutting out a piece of metal or plastic with for specimen a milling machine.

SketchUp is just made for 3D printing and designing in SketchUp is cool as 3D printing is something that moves is cooler and unique than that. In this article we are going to discuss about a few features that can be include by the users to make their creations more than just interestingly shaped hunks of immobile plastic. Aidan Chopra and Rebecca Huehls this time comes up with new tricks about 3D printing in SketchUp.

SketchUp or Google SketchUp is owned by Trimble Inc., a mapping, surveying and navigation company. It is mainly a 3D modeling computer program that is used for a broad range of drawing applications used by architects, interior designer, landscape architects, civil and mechanical engineers, film and video game designers also.

3D printing technology has changed many industries globally and among them most impact can be seen on Construction industry which offers freedom and versatility in a right budget. This article will describe four new 3D Printed projects in 2019 among Construction industry.

Most of the companies that use 3D printed program in construction are startups businesses are still in their developing phase though the number of countries using 3D technology is growing every day. Dubai is the leader of those countries where the most famous and luxurious UAE city has started a new structure that will be going to be built by using 3D technology.

      • Project Milestone: This is based in Eindhoven (the Netherlands), the engineers of Netherlands are planning to build five 3D printed concrete homes; this unique project makes them the first commercial housing project using 3D technology. Where the homes will be of new ages, having all kind of comforts etc.
      • Apis Cor: It is a startup which is located in San Francisco made a demonstration of its own 3D technology by creating a house in Stupino, Russia in 2016. Their technology is versatile and mobile as they printed the whole home on site to cut the transport expense. In future they are expecting to make homes using dual extrusion that will allow printing components other than the concrete structure. Recently the company has collaborated with SEArch+ and entered the “3D Printed Habitat Challenge”, a contest organized by NASA.
      • New Story: It is a nonprofit located in Texas who has partnered with Icon which is a company that creates printers, robotics and advanced materials to work on affordable housing solutions.
      • WinSun: WinSun created its first houses in 2013 using the first continuous 3D printer; they used a special mixture made of sand, cement and fibre along with suitable additions to print house components layer by layer in their Suzhou factory in China.

      "About The SketchUp Essentials ”

SketchUp’s two specialist Aidan Chopra and co-author Rebecca Huehls has written the book the SketchUp for Dummies where the way of Animating sections is discussed.

SketchUp software is an essential 3D modeling software for all the 3D modeling lovers and the SketchUp Essentials course is just a path to guide the users to use the tools in it.

SketchUp or Google SketchUp is mainly a3D modeling computer program that is used for a broad range of drawing applications used by architects, interior designer, landscape architects, civil and mechanical engineers, film and video game designers also. "The works of Stack Rock Group: A team of landscape designers”

The Stack Rock Group is focused on delivering wonderful projects to the world and in their every project they are using SketchUp that makes their work easier.

Trevor Ball is a designer and partner at Stack Rock Group, around 10 years earlier he was given free reign to choose a 3D modeler for making architecture designs and he chose SketchUp. After that in these 10 years he has become the lead 3D designer, Trevor and his team use SketchUp for all of their visualization projects. He has given an interview to Caroline Early where he has shared a lot about his company and his work, this article is just a little description of that conversation.

A little about Stock Rock Group: It is an eccentric and creative Landscape Architecture firm based in Boise, Idaho and they are creative idealists who can see every kind of possibilities. They usually set foundation of project with skillful and right questions that help their clients to clarify their personal and business goals, needs, wants and desires etc. Usually the group guides general contractors, construction managers, homeowners, landscape and building contractors, building architects, real estate developers, corporations, institutions, municipalities, wineries and vineyards through their individual attention and detail excursion for every project. Their collaborative, thoughtful process helps clients to grow their businesses, project sustainability and grows many more positive impacts on their environment.

Stock Rock Group is also called a “SketchUp Firm” as all the landscape architects knows that it is very necessary to express their designs to clients in a decent and culinary way for which they use SketchUp in all their 3D projects for strong visualization. Modeling in 3D also helps their clients to understand fully about the site which gives them the feeling about the final project and also allow the architects to make any further change in the project. SketchUp helps them to import the linework of every concept and model them quickly that helps them to meet the deadlines and client meetings.

Reason to become total SketchUp techie: Trevor calls himself ‘total SketchUp nerd’ as he has been working with it since ten years, everyday and he loves SketchUp’s native commands as it gives him the ability to customize toolbars, help to find numerous groundbreaking extensions. According to him, SketchUp has any kind of extension for users for any field and the SketchUp Community forums have some of SketchUp Sages that will answer any asked questions by the users in a record time plus there is also other helpful users and SketchUp team members.

The team at Stock Rock Group: Though Trevor and his helpers is a part of a small team which is an 11 members team currently at Stack Rock Group and based in Boise, Idaho but has a growing office in Salt Lake City where they design projects all over the country like from California to Florida and everything in between. All the members know that they have the chance to make this firm exactly the place they want it to be, for which they are very serious and focused on their works. Moreover that, they don’t believe in finding the area f improvement rather they like to improve in every bit of their work. This little team is so dedicated and talented that it can handle a lot of projects around Boise like from small backyard planting, parks to medical and college campus, luxury residential properties, corporate campuses etc. and many more.

Some projects handled by the team: One of their main commercial projects was the HP campus located in Boise which is the first Sustainable SITES Initiative certified corporate campus in the world. SITES is the United States’ Green Building Council sustainable rating system for landscapes. This campus is above 200 acres where are 46 acres of moistened turf grass; 36 acres of active farmland etc. This project is like an investment in the local ecosystem services and as a sustainable model for site users and the community that become a huge success.

They are continuously focused on taking care their current clients and working on new projects; also unfinished with VR and alternatives rotes for rendering.

      "SketchUp Success for Woodworkers”

David Heim, a SketchUp user and known book and magazine editor specializing in woodworking has been using SketchUp for a long time and moved to Fine Woodworking Magazine.

About David Heim: David Heim is an experienced book and magazine editor specializing in wood working; previously he worked at Consumer Reports for 28 years and now he has been working with Fine Woodworking magazine. David generally writes about SketchUp and also gives training on SketchUp for over four years and all his projects are made in SketchUp. He has been using, teaching and writing about SketchUp since 2007 and he also has edited three books and produced more than 400 furniture models for the 3D Warehouse.

This article is one of his blog posts from his new book, “SketchUp Success for Woodworkers.” For David the models should be clean and defining a modeling order will consider the cleanliness of model as in woodworking a sound can be heard while arranging all of them in order like from start to finish. David has worked in SketchUp similar way like he at first defined the steps and orders at the beginning of the modeling.

As an example if anyone starts to model a kitchen, the person has to start the work from modeling the kitchen cabinets first; then the shelves, bottom of the shelves, slab, the gas oven keeper, drawers, fridge cabinet etc. So basically it like top to bottom order that will easier the work of modeling and helps to enter every detail clearly in SketchUp and also in the real life.

But if one wants to model a more complex thing, like a dresser or a sideboard constructing the SketchUp model as the real thing will give permission to glue up all the things first. Here in SketchUp the modeler can use X-ray mode which will help to look through the components giving a clear view of the other objects and to dry fit it. So while working in SketchUp, at first it is needed to divide the making of components in parts as it will give better detail view of them. It is better to add the components in place one by one so that they could fit well against mating pieces as per their size and given space.

As an example while making a small occasional table with tapered legs which will connect to stretchers with mortise-and-tenon joints, first step is defining the modeling order like the legs are made first. Next the stretcher has to make and these stretcher has to be placed between the legs of the table; then just add tenons at the ends of those stretchers that will make the model ready for next modeling sequence.

The above process is for SketchUp modeling, while making them in the shop or in reality, one has to follow the steps in a way that will give the model its right figure. Like at first a mortise has to make and then the tenons will cut in size to fit in it, next start with one leg component to edit and zooming in for a detail view f the top area where the stretcher touches the legs. Now it is the time to draw another portion in SketchUp again, X-ray mode is put on again to view tenon through the fixed leg, now the Line or Rectangle tools are used to trace over the base of the tenon to produce similar area on the leg. Next the Push/Pull tool is used to push the area to the end of the tenon; the similar process will follow in the second mortise.

Now the structure of the table is completed so it is the time to fix he top with the bottom parts, the rectangle tool is used to draw a rectangle in place right over the top of the legs. Then the Offset toll is used to enlarge the rectangle for the needed overhang, after that the original rectangle is removed to give the top its thickness and turn into a component.
