All about 2020.1 SketchUp

Trimble SketchUp 2020 has already been a major hit among the users with its many capabilities. And now, based upon many user-requests, the dev team has rolled out the first update. Let’s go and have a look at what is new in SketchUp 2020.1!

The team has polished up some existing features and added a few as well. Those include:

1. Scenes Panel
2. Section Planes and Scenes
3. Editable hidden objects
4. Improved grips
5. Empty objects
6. LayOut Performance
7. Improved select tool

Now let us look at these features one by one.

Scenes Panel: Since you've had some opportunities to appreciate better flipping perceivability with concealed geometry and articles, we've chosen to make it stunningly better. We split up shrouded geometry and concealed items so you can choose and spare them independently on a Scene-by-Scene premise.

You will see another checkbox in the Scenes board that lets you spare the perceivability condition of concealed articles, not simply shrouded geometry. This gives you better perceivability control per Scene.

Area Planes and Scenes: Scenes are feeling so found in this discharge! In this new form of SketchUp, you would now be able to spare Section Plane perceivability per Scene. Since Section Planes are gathered with objects, we need to ensure they carry on like articles.

What's the incentive here? Prior to this change, just top-level perceivability could be spared per Scene. Once more, more control in your Scenes — and consistency across usefulness.

Editable Hidden Objects: Uplifting news... concealed articles are presently editable. Altering imperceptible things may seem like a superpower, yet it's extremely only an incredible new component. At the point when you select a concealed article in Outliner, it will presently show up as a work.

This implies you can make increasingly exact alters easily, rather than attempting to modify an item you can't see. So fight the good fight without thwarting your altering work process. It's not the covering that makes the legend, yet the modeler inside.

Upgrades to Grips: A little, yet ground-breaking highlight: you would now be able to go through ALL Grips when utilizing the Rotate device — simply like the Move apparatus! This gives more consistency between the apparatuses so you can remain concentrated on your task.

3skeng 2019 Mount 3D: SketchUp Extension Review

SHK, an engineering and consulting firm working for the high-tech Semiconductor industry has been developing extensions for SketchUp for a while now. Their engineering and software team work hand in hand to develop powerful extensions for professionals using SketchUp for designing engineering plans, named under ‘3skeng’.

The latest from the 3skeng group is the 3skeng Mount. It is a plugin for SketchUp 2017 and above, helping users design and document MEP and 3D support and secondary framework including ducts and pipes. It is actually a part of the 3skeng Engineering package which also contains 3skeng Pipe, 3skeng Steelwork and 3skeng Channel.

Features: 3skeng Mount is your go-to tool for drawing secondary and support steelwork models. This may or may not include proper fittings, supports, and so much more. The libraries available will let you choose from different channel types, while a memory function comes invaluable in doing repetitive work.

One of the best options available in this extension is called the “Mount Tool”. It will recognize 3skeng pipe elements by a presection method, in which you can input your choice of pipes and duct definitions. Moreover, it can automatically align rotations, positions and elevations. You can do this just by a double click - how cool is that?

The Mount Tool does more than that. It will pick up 3skeng Steelwork elements to attach supports to them. You can direct it to attach the supports to top of the beam flanges and clamps, or to the side of the flanges.

What’s New in SketchUp Pro 2020

The new SketchUp Pro 2020 is out! You can grab the latest with the updates, if you already have the subscription. Or you can download a fresh copy off Trimble’s site. Either way, you get to enjoy the cool new additions to this hot design and modeling software. Today, let us see what are these new additions in SketchUp Pro 2020.

1. Meet Laura: Trimble has added a new and attractive personality in the SketchUp 2020. The latest scale figure in SketchUp is called Laura.

To clarify, a scale figure in SketchUp is the figure you see standing at the intersection of the red, blue and green lines, at the time when you start a new drawing. The figure is given there according to scale. This helps you to design your model and compare it to real life dimensions.

Laura, the latest addition to the line of scale figures in SketchUp, is a great fit to the modern designers empty workspace. She looks caucasian with her fair skin and dirty-blonde hair. Dressed in a simple crisp red-and-blue attire, she carries a bag and kinda brings up the working mom vibe. Mystery point: what does the pendant on her neck hold?

2. A New 3D Creative Space: To make sure the modeling space is more intuitive and the data structure more supportive to the users’ needs, Trimble has made some big changes in this year’s SketchUp. The first thing you will notice is in the Outliner, then it will go on to snapping objects, then we will move on to hiding stuff and changes in LayOut.

The Outliner: A great model organization change took place in this. Now, you won’t have to keep making layer upon layer. You can directly organize your model in the Outliner straight away. Create chunks of stuff in your model and hide/unhide them as you please in the Outliner. The friendly eyeball icon comes in very handy here. More on this is detailed in this video.

Sky View Analysis is the newest member in the extension warehouse

Sky View Analysis is an exclusive sketchup plugin that can be used to work out sky exposure and sky view factor.
SVF: Sky View Factor (SVFs) demonstrates the ratio at a point in space among the visible sky and a hemisphere centered over the analyzed location (Oke 1981).
• If SVF of a point is 0 the entire sky is barred from view through obstacles.
• If SVF of a point is 1 the whole sky is free from view through obstacles (ideal rural scenario).
A relation persists among Sky View Factor and Radiation.
for SVF = 0 :
1. there is no short-wave reflection
2. there is no long-wave nocturnal interference
for SVF > 0 :
1. incoming day-time short-wave reflection is raised throughout the day
2. outgoing night-time long-wave radiation is decreased
3. incoming night-time long-wave radiation is raised
4. altered soil heat flux
Features:
• Generate Sky Exposure Mask
• Generate Sky View Factor Mask
• Apply several times similar dome for Sky Exposure measurement
It belongs to an open source plugin and it is available in GitHub-AntonelloDN
For online demonstration, go through the following video tutorial.

Attributes in SketchUp means supplementary pieces of information that is preserved with any entity, like groups, components, scenes.

As for instance one can preserve a part number, unit price, weight or notes with an entity and read or adjust that information later. All attributes are contained in SketchUp's report feature.

The purpose of this inspector is to maintain the user interface nominal and fully organized similar to SketchUp's inspector dialogs, it allows you to choose one or more entities and demonstrates their attributes. By editing the text fields, The changes are instantly reflected to the entities.

Application: (Menu) Window → Attribute Inspector

The dialog presents the attribute dictionaries of the currently selected drawing element. Apply the selection tool of SketchUp to choose another elements.

Press the +, ‒ buttons on the left side for addition or elimination of an attribute dictionary, and press +, ‒ on the right side for addition or elimination an attribute.

"SketchUp Success for Woodworkers”

David Heim, a SketchUp user and known book and magazine editor specializing in woodworking has been using SketchUp for a long time and moved to Fine Woodworking Magazine.

About David Heim: David Heim is an experienced book and magazine editor specializing in wood working; previously he worked at Consumer Reports for 28 years and now he has been working with Fine Woodworking magazine. David generally writes about SketchUp and also gives training on SketchUp for over four years and all his projects are made in SketchUp. He has been using, teaching and writing about SketchUp since 2007 and he also has edited three books and produced more than 400 furniture models for the 3D Warehouse.

This article is one of his blog posts from his new book, “SketchUp Success for Woodworkers.” For David the models should be clean and defining a modeling order will consider the cleanliness of model as in woodworking a sound can be heard while arranging all of them in order like from start to finish. David has worked in SketchUp similar way like he at first defined the steps and orders at the beginning of the modeling.

As an example if anyone starts to model a kitchen, the person has to start the work from modeling the kitchen cabinets first; then the shelves, bottom of the shelves, slab, the gas oven keeper, drawers, fridge cabinet etc. So basically it like top to bottom order that will easier the work of modeling and helps to enter every detail clearly in SketchUp and also in the real life.

But if one wants to model a more complex thing, like a dresser or a sideboard constructing the SketchUp model as the real thing will give permission to glue up all the things first. Here in SketchUp the modeler can use X-ray mode which will help to look through the components giving a clear view of the other objects and to dry fit it. So while working in SketchUp, at first it is needed to divide the making of components in parts as it will give better detail view of them. It is better to add the components in place one by one so that they could fit well against mating pieces as per their size and given space.

As an example while making a small occasional table with tapered legs which will connect to stretchers with mortise-and-tenon joints, first step is defining the modeling order like the legs are made first. Next the stretcher has to make and these stretcher has to be placed between the legs of the table; then just add tenons at the ends of those stretchers that will make the model ready for next modeling sequence.

The above process is for SketchUp modeling, while making them in the shop or in reality, one has to follow the steps in a way that will give the model its right figure. Like at first a mortise has to make and then the tenons will cut in size to fit in it, next start with one leg component to edit and zooming in for a detail view f the top area where the stretcher touches the legs. Now it is the time to draw another portion in SketchUp again, X-ray mode is put on again to view tenon through the fixed leg, now the Line or Rectangle tools are used to trace over the base of the tenon to produce similar area on the leg. Next the Push/Pull tool is used to push the area to the end of the tenon; the similar process will follow in the second mortise.

Now the structure of the table is completed so it is the time to fix he top with the bottom parts, the rectangle tool is used to draw a rectangle in place right over the top of the legs. Then the Offset toll is used to enlarge the rectangle for the needed overhang, after that the original rectangle is removed to give the top its thickness and turn into a component.

SketchUp or Google SketchUp is mainly a3D modeling computer program that is used for a broad range of drawing applications used by architects, interior designer, landscape architects, civil and mechanical engineers, film and video game designers also. SketchUp can be getting as a freeware version named SketchUp Make and a paid version with many more extra benefits called SketchUp Pro. SketchUp is software from Trimble Company and there is an online library of free model congregations and 3D Warehouse to which users can add other models; besides that, the program has drawing layout functionality with variable ‘styles’, supports third-party ‘plug-in’ programs hosted on the Extension Warehouse to supply other abilities and enables placement of its models in Google Earth.
