Some useful sketchup tips for improving your model renderings

SketchOSM by PlaceMaker - New Horizons in Parametric World Modeling

Have you ever wondered, why not put your neighborhood on the map? The SketchOSM plugin for SketchUp, by PlaceMaker, lets you do just that! You can create parametric buildings in a few quick clicks and share them with the world in a jiffy.

Trimble SketchUp is famous for its flexibility, which comes from its ability to integrate many extensions or plugins from various sources. Though only SketchUp Pro and above can do this, it is still an awesome way to customize and empower this lovely modeling and rendering software.

What is SketchOSM by PlaceMaker?

What’s New in SketchUp Pro 2020

The new SketchUp Pro 2020 is out! You can grab the latest with the updates, if you already have the subscription. Or you can download a fresh copy off Trimble’s site. Either way, you get to enjoy the cool new additions to this hot design and modeling software. Today, let us see what are these new additions in SketchUp Pro 2020.
 
1. Meet Laura: Trimble has added a new and attractive personality in the SketchUp 2020. The latest scale figure in SketchUp is called Laura.
 
To clarify, a scale figure in SketchUp is the figure you see standing at the intersection of the red, blue and green lines, at the time when you start a new drawing. The figure is given there according to scale. This helps you to design your model and compare it to real life dimensions.

Laura, the latest addition to the line of scale figures in SketchUp, is a great fit to the modern designers empty workspace. She looks caucasian with her fair skin and dirty-blonde hair. Dressed in a simple crisp red-and-blue attire, she carries a bag and kinda brings up the working mom vibe. Mystery point: what does the pendant on her neck hold?

2. A New 3D Creative Space: To make sure the modeling space is more intuitive and the data structure more supportive to the users’ needs, Trimble has made some big changes in this year’s SketchUp. The first thing you will notice is in the Outliner, then it will go on to snapping objects, then we will move on to hiding stuff and changes in LayOut.
 
The Outliner: A great model organization change took place in this. Now, you won’t have to keep making layer upon layer. You can directly organize your model in the Outliner straight away. Create chunks of stuff in your model and hide/unhide them as you please in the Outliner. The friendly eyeball icon comes in very handy here. More on this is detailed in this video.

"About Maciej Fijalowski of VR Sketch"

Maciej Fijalkowski is the one member among the founders of the VR Sketch in SketchUp, he and his team is working on developing VR with SketchUp to make it more accessible.

Maciej Fijalkowski is the surfer, programmer and climbing gym designer about the current state of VR industry and the one behind the VR Sketch extension. He is basically from Łódź, Poland but now living at Cape Town Area, South Africa. He went to Warsaw for study; he always wanted to go and study abroad but couldn’t afford so he started to explore more as a traveler. He also worked at the University of Warsaw at the Center for Mathematical and Computational Modeling; while working there and being a student he got into Google Summer of Code and became interested in Pypy.

Later his company has introduced a new concept into the Sketch Up word with VR Sketch which enables the creation, manipulation and presentation of models in a fully immersive virtual reality environment.

A little about VR Sketch: It is an extension for SketchUp which gives anyone the ability to create, edit and view their models in Virtual Reality. It also gives designers the ability to communicate space that clearly allows them well informed decisions to make with instant feedback. VR Sketch is a small but a dynamic company which plans to revolutionize the thinking of people about the way of design and faster design. The landscape of hardware abilities will only improve and everyone can see more and more design work done in VR. Sketch will keep iterating quickly to deliver cutting edge solutions for more years.

Inspiration behind VR Sketch: As per his words, during the process of designing and creating a new rock climbing gym, he purchased a VR headset as a help in visualizing projects. Though SktechUp is a very easy to learn but it can be difficult while mapping of 2D screens to 3D space. So they thought to make something which will help to solve this problem and thus they started the company in April 2018. Maciej is now living in Cape Town with his co-founder, Duncan Fraser who is an architect and travels often.

Projects: The team has handled many things together in past but from a long time they only focused on a project called Pypy which is an open source software for a faster way to run Python code. VR Sketch is their first venture into architecture and design which has introduced to the through SketchUp 3D Basecamp with greater diversity in those attending versus the Python conferences. VR Sketch needs less of any skills which a trained architect must have and helps architects to work more easily on the 3D models.

VR Sketch works with all the high-end hardware like HTC Vive, Oculus Rift those with touch controllers and some mixed reality headsets. They have been working on more major headsets which will be function by Oculus Quest. The team has focused on doing things well for the higher-end devices and consider the availability of any design tool to be a main consideration.

Industry trends to follow for future app development: According to them, much of 3D design will move into the VR space and everyone will see huge iterations in hardware design. Headsets will be lighter and more affordable and controllers will be less clumsy. Software side will also be upgraded with major changes; this huge evolution and interconnection between hardware and software in the VR industry will create many more opportunities for them. Now they are working on a cloud-enabled collaboration which help users in working on a model with distant team members simultaneously and keep a full version control.

Dream Project: He is really interested in urban design and with an unlimited budget, he would be involved in developing a “Chartered City” as theorized by Paul Romer, where it is possible to play with new ideas every time.

Some useful guidelines to perform exterior rendering with v-ray next for sketchup

7 tips when starting 3D Printing

Our tech club at middle school of late had a chance of receiving a new 3D Printer donated by someone... We're also lucky enough to have a go-getting 8th grader with some knowledge of 3D printing at home who took the lead in recommending, ordering and setting up the 3D Printer. http://www.mkrclub.com/ has published this blog.

It was all set up (Flashforge, dual Extruder!), of course the printing fun starts - and so did the learning.
The small lessons we learned seemed worth sharing:

1 - Don't rush the printer set up: This one in fact is more than just one tip - but too involved to provide details here. Let's just say a 3D Printer is not a toaster - you likely won't be capable taking it out of the box, turn it on, and just begin toasting stuff.

There are key things to get right, and if your printer company doesn't give details it well (you shouldn't have carried that particular printer, and) you should go right to YouTube or the web and find people who have done it before. Bed-leveling, Software setup, Printer configurations for the filament you have, filament loading, and especially bed preparing to make sure your models will stick to the bed. This can get much complex - so have a knowledgeable person on hand if at all possible. We found bed adhesion to be the trickiest part - so be prepared to get some painters tape or kapton or hairspray (yes, hairspray).

2 - Start Modeling Early: Now before you get a printer, try some #3Dmodeling apps and make things that you will at last print. I use Autodesk 123D Design. Tech Club uses TinkerCad - both very trouble-free. A very big portion of the learning is in the modeling, not just the physical printing. Kids who have many hope of printing custom objects, parts, kits, etc, will need this skill. The father of the 8th grader who set up the school's printer has a great regulation at home – “If you didn't model it yourself, you can't print it.” That's a motivational rule I really like for schools.

3 - Print Small Models: There's characteristically more than one person waiting to print something - and if you print something that takes hours to print, 1) you'll reduce the motivation for those waiting to print. 2) You'll simply decrease the experimentation and your competence would be leaning. You learn more with every print - so print lots of projects, not less large projects, and 3) You'll misuse resources - since failures (perhaps common in the early days) will take lots of material and time.

4 - Start Simple (e.g. no dual extrusion): There are lots of ways to make a project more complicated - but save those for later. If you suppose to get a dual extruder (we were so lucky!) - It means you can print in two colors - but don't! Wait till you get the hang of simple things. If you are tempted to use a sculpting app which takes 360 view of your principal and prints her - don't! Save that for week 2 (or week 22). Get the basics down, and then advance.

5 - Start with PLA Filament: While the blog writer doesn’t have any useful data or facts here - there is the belief that ABS, since it is petroleum-based, gives off bad smelling fumes more than PLA, which is corn-based (and actually smells sweet when it extrudes). Again - no data here - but it seems PLA has less concern than ABS, especially if the printer is in an unaired space. Some articles I found on this topic range from the not so frightening to the worst-thing-since-poison. He thinks there needs to be more facts here, which leads me to consider a conservative approach is best to start.

6 - Model and Print semi-useful things: Motivation on the part of students and team members - to learn modeling and work through problems - will be much more simply maintained if they can experience real benefits from their efforts. Attractive trinkets for your desk will only last in a brisk of time - but even a pencil holder or a pegboard hook will give a greater sense of achievement and will even excite the parents.

7 - Document your failures and successes: Start a journal - could be a blog, a spreadsheet, a folder with project write-ups and results - to give the people modeling and printing a place to share what they learn and to continually build up the knowledge of the team and others. This is also great to educate the scientific method. Ask students to form a theory each time they change something in their project and document the results. You'll be amazed at the amount of testing you end up doing.

Live interaction with team of Sefaira for smart modeling for building performance
Sefaira is an energy and daylighting analysis extension for sketchup that facilitates the architects and designers to take decisions resembling form, orientation, and facade design by obtaining real-time feedback in SketchUp.

The sketchup team had attended a webinar alias Smart Modeling for Building Performance in previous month which was based on how to apply sketchup with the Sefaira extension.

Given below a recorded version of the webinar which highlighted the smart modeling tricks for performance based design in SketchUp and Sefaira as well as some sketchup methods for streamlining the modeling process at initial phase of design.
