GOING FROM SKETCHUP TO UNITY USING PBR MATERIALS

SketchUp users are pro in creating different textures and models using various textures from the Extension Warehouse; similarly they can go from SketchUp to Unity with PBR materials.

This article will clearly describes about PBR materials and the way of going back on the PBR to Unity 5.6 pipeline workflow for SketchUp through some easy steps.

PBR: PBR or Physically Based Rendering is a method of shading and rendering that provides a more perfect representation of how light interacts with the surfaces. PBR is also referred to as Physically Based Shading depending on the aspect of pipeline being discussed; PBR is usually specific to shading concepts and specific to rendering and lighting. Though, both these terms describe the process of representing assets from a physically accurate standpoint.

SketchUV: It is an UV mapping tool which is used to draw spherical, cylindrical, planer, tube, box, quad shapes and can do save, load, export and import. SketchUV is designed to be easier to use and UV mapping in general takes some time to get use to. The features are noted here:
  • It can draw planar, cylindrical and spherical UV projections at any orientation

Tape Measure Tool in SketchUp

SketchUp’s Tape Measure Tool works as a Protector Tool and comes with the Measurements box that helps users to resize the whole model with a single measurement.

Tape Measure Tool is the Protractor Tool in SketchUp, and the Measurements box enable users to model precisely; this tool will help user to resize the whole model based on a single measurement. This article is a full guideline about Tape Measure tool and its working methods.

Getting started with the Tape Measure Tool: SketchUp’s Tape Measure Tool can be found in the Tools menu or via the Getting Started menu, Construction or Large Toolset toolbar. There is also a shortcut key which is T; after activating the cursor in the workspace it will be changed to a Tape Measure icon that has 2 models of measuring. With this tool, users can measure a distance and set precise guidelines or guide points. While the Protractor tool enables users to measure angles and set a precise angled guide line.

Using Measure mode: It is a wonderful way to report measurements from a point to many points; to change to a new measuring point just press ESC key and pick a new point to measure from. This mode also acts like a scale in the model and this method is a global resize which means not only the model is resized before but can be done with an object locally.

Guiding Create mode in SketchUp: In this mode, the Tape Measure Tool allows the users to plot guide lines and points in SketchUp to accurate draw in the workspace. This mode has also different methods of drawing guides and it totally depends on the clicked place and subject. 1) Infinite Guide lines in SketchUp is created when users glide on an edge in SketchUp and click it but while creating the infinite guides using the array commands isn’t possible. 2) To create guide lines that terminate with a construction point, users need to first select an endpoint then select the desired direction and length of the measurement.

Deleting Guide lines in SketchUp: The Select tool or the Erase tool can help to target and remove areas but the Delete Guides option in the Edit menu which will delete all lines and points within the current context of the model. So if the user is within a group or component and choose this option then it will remove all guides within that context but not outside.

Managing and deleting Guide lines in SketchUp using extensions: The right way to manage guide lines and guide points in SketchUp by using an extension which is known as TIG’s Construction Line Delete via Context extension that extends SketchUp by adding further options while Right clicking in an existing Guide Line. To install this extension, users need to go to the ExtensionStore in SketchUp, then need to search feature and type guide and choose the extension and install it. Now in SketchUp, users have access to more deletion and layer management options for Guide Lines and Points via the context menu; this option also has placing Guide Lines and Guide Points on dedicated layers, deleting Guide Line and Guide Points from the active selection or applying it to both Guide Lines and Guide Points.

"CLEANUP3 TOOL FROM SKETCHUP EXTENSION WAREHOUSE"

SketchUp is an essential tool in 3D printing and SketchUp Extension warehouse is full of tools that are essential in the 3D printing and creating 3D printed models, such as CleanUp3.

About CleanUp3:

"Custom Toolbar Button Images in LayOut”

SketchUp users can get a nice new button icon in the toolbar and can add a Custom toolbar button images in LayOut which is though an easy thing but need extra care to do it.

Matt Donley: Matt Donley has been working with SketchUp since 2007; at first he started working as a carpenter and started using SketchUp to model things around his house. After that he started to model his customer’s homes for helping them to visualize their construction projects. He also wrote the “SketchUp to LayOut” book as a help for other construction professionals as a learn how to make construction documents using SketchUp and LayOut. He shares his SketchUp knowledge online with SketchUp users where he teaches how to create tutorials and videos for helping people to learn how to work with 3D model online.

In this article Matt has described about a new idea where he will show how to create own custom buttons for any LayOut command as well as the way of creating a custom button image for users to use the super-secret-hidden-built-in button image editor. Matt always has thought that the default toolbar in LayOut should include a button to insert a SketchUp model into LayOut file; though it is a common thing to do but it is a little weird to have to go to File > Insert every time. Though, this option is a Windows-only option as it has a huge range of toolbar.

How to add Custom LayOut Commands:

  • It is a simple way to add new buttons to any LayOut toolbars and here are the steps to do:
  • At first users have to do Right-click in the toolbar area and then select the Customize option.
  • Next they need to select the Command tab in the Customize window.
  • Then users can find the commands that they want to add to their toolbar and then drag it directly into the toolbar.
As all the commands don’t have icon images related to them, so there will appear an ugly text button for these commands.

Using the LayOut Button Image Editor:

It is not known o all that, when users have the customize window active, all of the toolbar buttons become editable; then users can drag them to various positions and can pull them out of the toolbar to remove them. Users can also click right button on them to get a context-menu; this context-menu will give the users some magical capability to change the look of button. Though the image can be downloaded from a pop-up appears in below the page; here are the ways to add an image to the button:

In the Image Editor, users can use the drawing tools to create their own icon or can import an icon that they have created in an external image editor. To import, click on File menu and go to Open option. If users don’t want to go through the image editor window they can have the image copied on the clipboard and can select Paste Button Image directly from the button context menu.

"Creating Own SketchUp Material Libraries”

SketchUp Material Libraries contain a huge number of textures and materials; this Libraries can be created by user following some easy steps.
3D printing or additive manufacturing is way of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital life. The creation or making of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes and in this process, an object is made by laying down successive layers of material till the object is created. Each of these layers can be visible as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object. So basically 3D printing is the opposite of subtractive manufacturing which is cutting out a piece of metal or plastic with for specimen a milling machine.

There are more than 5000 materials in the nXt Material Library from where any user can select any material and place it on a SketchUp face to create a similar SketchUp material. In many cases the SketchUp material is like an estimate of the full fractal material which will be created when users render the model.

The way of downloading the nXt Libraries:

Here are the steps to download and install the latest libraries:

  • Click on the Downloads Page.
  • After that users have to enter their name and email address and proceed to the download page.
  • Next they need to select IRender nXt Libraries from the right of the first row of downloads.

The download contains:

  • New nXt Materials.
  • Older AccuRender Materials converted to nXt format
  • New nXt Plants and Trees
  • Older AR4 Plant and Tree Library
  • HDRi Skies for the second and additional tabs on the HDRi Setup dialog

The IRender nXt Libraries of plans and materials are only available for the clients who purchase IRender nXt. The Libraries have the things like:

  • AR3 materials converted to nXT .ArMaterial file format.
  • New .ArMaterial files created for nXt.
  • AR3 Trees and Plants.
  • New nXt Trees.
  • Additional HDRi skies for use with IRender nXt.

Among many materials of nXt Libarries SketchUp Materials Palette is one which is used to create some different patterns and colors in SketchUp model. To open the SKetchUp Materials Palette here are the steps to follow

  • Click the ‘Paint Bucket Tool’ in the toolbar or use Windows > Materials menu entry.
  • This will launch the palette from the toolbar button.
  • Now click the ‘Create Material’ icon which will open a separate window that will allow the users to input some color values or to add textures and set opacity levels for the material.
  • If users want to load their own texture in the Palette simply click the ‘Browse’ icon in the texture section of the Create Material Palette which will launch the ‘Open File’ dialog and then can navigate to the location of the texture image in the hard drive.
  • After getting the texture just click open to load it into SketchUp’s ‘Create Material Palette’. Then users can give a name and dimensions to the texture and click ‘OK’ to create the new material.
  • To locate texture in SketchUp, users can pick ‘In Model’ option from the dropdown list; this option will display all the textures currently in the model.
  • Then save this new created texture into a new library Right click it and choose ‘Save As’ from the context menu.
  • .skm is the default file type in it; to save materials to already existing libraries click the ‘Display secondary selection pane’ button.

SketchUp Texture libarery is full of different textures that need to use in the SketchUp models; but there are some textures not available, users can create their own and make Custom Materials.

As SketchUp users are most of architects, designers, builders, makers and engineers etc. who works hard to give a nice shape to our physical world, they need great tools to do the work. Though SketchUp has a quite nice order of materials built into it but it doesn’t have all the materials that people want; this is a description of a tutorial that will help the users to learn more about importing favorite SketchUp textures and turning them into new materials which are used in the models.

Creating Custom Material Libraries in SketchUp is depended on understanding the nature of materials within SketchUp; so the first thing the users need to know is about the original images themselves which may be in the JPEG format or so on are not really SketchUp materials. Originally they are the images that can load in order for creating these materials; the original material file is a file that can be created within SketchUp that specifies about the material. For creating this material file, users need to start off by making a custom material that can be downloaded from many places like SketchUp Texture Club, CG Textures, and Textures.com etc. The process will be started form clicking the plus button which is in the upper right hand corner that will create a new material, if anyone wants to base it on a repeating texture image then users can click on go down option and check the box for “use texture image,”; next users have to find the related image to create a texture. Next the image has to resized and repositioned in the model, after completing it the material will be created and need to rename it and save it in the database.

Importing SketchUp textures and creating Custom Materials:
  • At first, users need to find a SketchUp texture to use; SketchUp texture is a great place to find a huge number of free textures. While CGtextures extension is used as a replacement of SketchUptexture extension earlier which are not all super clean but has an awesome library to look through.
  • Then users have to click on Paint Bucket Tool that will show the Materials window pop-up. Or they can go to the Window tab and select Materials from the drop-down list.
  • Next click the Create Material button from the Material window.
  • After that the Create Material window will pop-up; it will help to import the SketchUp textures. To import the textures users need to click the Import Image option in the Texture Editor section, here the texture image will get uploaded and a preview of it will be seen in the upper left hand corner. The Color Editor section is used to adjust the material’s color without editing it in an external program and reimport it. Te Colorize option is there in the Texture Editor section which will turns texture to black and white and then puts the color overlay on top. The Texture Scale & Lock option in the Texture Editor section will help to adjust the scale of the SketchUp texture. The Reset Color option will help to put the colors from beginning if anything turns bad.
  • Next click Ok; after that the custom material will show up in the SketchUp material library. Select it, take the Paint Bucket tool and paint it.

"Using SketchUp’s CleanUp3 and Solid Inspetcor2 tools”

  • CleanUp3: This extension checks and simplifies the geometry of every SketchUp model and combines multiple faces, deletes extraneous data any lines that don’t create a face. There are also two most useful CleanUp3 options in the Warehouse such as Erase Duplicate Faces and Repair Split Edges which can be enabled in the CleanUp3 menu. These two options are errors that surely appear in the model while working in SketchUp and they drive 3D printers nuts; moreover that these two are hard to identify and repair manually. This extension also simplify STL or 3D-printable files that are imported into many triangles and by removing that triangulation, CleanUp3 makes files downloaded from 3D printing communities easily edited in SketchUp.
  • Solid Inspector2: This extension finds and highlights problems that are stopping SketchUp 3D models from being a solid shell and its usefulness cannot be exaggerated. It also highlights problem areas and helps users automatically from one error to another and does the repairs much faster. So it is must have tool in every SketchUp model.
While working with 3D modeling in SKetchUp, everyone should run CleanUp3 periodically and run Soli Inspector2 before exporting from SketchUp to 3D print is also necessary as they both will help to find errors that would cause the printing failure.

Method to use Freehand Tool: Drawing Toolbar is found in the following path: View> Toolbars> Check the Drawing Option. After clicking on the Drawing option or Drawing Toolbar a small window will open where some icons can be seen; from there users need to left click on the Pencil icon which will activate the Freehand tool, then simply moving mouse users can draw their shapes and after completing the drawing just need to click on the mouse and the drawing will be completed.
Under the hood, the drawn lines with the Freehand tool become curve entities or ployline entities. Here is a little information that is needed to know about each of these entity types:
• The curve entity contains many line segments but can be defined and divided a face like a single line. Despite of selecting all the segments in a curve entity at a single time, the SketchUp inference engine displays point and edge inferences for every segment in the entity.
• While a polyline entity doesn’t create faces or affect geometry in any way. A polyline entity is created only when am user can hold down the Shift key similar as drawing with the Freehand tool. These polyline entities are thinner than curve entities.

About SketchUp: SketchUp or Google SketchUp is mainly a 3D modeling computer program that is used for a broad range of drawing applications used by architects, interior designer, landscape architects, civil and mechanical engineers, film and video game designers also. SketchUp can be getting as a freeware version named SketchUp Make and a paid version with many more extra benefits called SketchUp Pro. Walkthrough is a really great method to use scenes as here users have to pretend as walking or flying through their SketchUp model; just need to set up the scenes continually and here they can add a seamless tour without messing around with the navigation tools. This setup is very easy to use while walking and talking at the same time, so here are some tips about simulating a person walking or flying through the model wit scenes:

  • Adjusting the field of view:
Users can adjust their field of view for interior animations and it follows some steps- at first the camera has to see in a wider “see” area by setting the field of view to 60 degrees. If they want to adjust the exterior view, they just need to try a field of view that is between 30 and 45 degrees.

  • Scenes should not be too far apart:
Adding scenes in the SketchUp model gives the model more lively attractions and it will also make the model more attractive.

  • Adding scenes at equal distance intervals:
It is good to add scenes in an equal distance as SketchUp only allows users to control the scene transition timing for all the scenes in one time.

  • Always set the animation settings in the Model info Dialog box:
The users can set the scenes delay to 0 seconds that will help to continue the animation at every scene and it will gives the audiences time to look around and notice every scene in detail.

  • Slide around corners:
While setting up a walk animation, users can have an easy and certain way to turn corners without making it to technical. Generally the trick is to add a scene just short of where the users want to turn like a few feet ahead of the doorway. The reason is to angle the view into the turn slightly and then set the next scene just past the turn, close to the inside and facing the new view; this whole technique makes the model like turning corners naturally.

Besides that, users may also align to a plane and for this they have to tap the tab key at first, after clicking on the tab key Curic align will try to move the objects to make them in line with the plane and also align the objects along lines.

"Curic Space for SketchUp Function description”

SketchUp Extension Curic Space is designed to help users to space objects inside the models quickly and users can use this extension for making copies of single objects etc.

This article is about the new SketchUp Plugin, Curic Space is an extension that gives users many options for spacing objects equally within SketchUp.

Curic Space: The simplest function of this extension is to choose multiple different objects, then selecting the axis with which users like the objects to be spaced and users can give any value to adjust the spacing. The entering of space values can be done as long as users don’t click out of the tool; they can also space across multiple axes by clicking on a new axis and typing in a value. Besides all of this, this extension also has an object duplication tool that can be activated in two simple steps: at first users need to click on a single instance of an object and then click on the Curic Space icon.

This extension does three things which are:

  • Creating Copies of Single Objects
  • Space objects based on the object centers
  • Space objects based on object origins
Copying objects: Users can create copies of objects with Curic space by selecting a single object and clicking the curic space button. If user selects only one object, the extension will ask the number of copies want to create and after creating the copies, all are inserted at the same point that can only space out by Curic space.

Spacing objects based on centres: The following extension allows users to neglect objects based on object centers where the center is found as pr the selected objects, then space every along a selected direction. Users can type in a numerical value and press the enter key to space every object; also users can enter a different value and press enter key to put different spacings.
Spacing objects based on origin: Curic space also has the option where users can space objects based on the object origin which can be useful while dealing with objects which are not the same width.

" Browsing for Extension in SketchUp”

SketchUp Extension Warehouse has a huge amount of tools or extensions under it and these are very useful for the users, there is a right way to browse extension for SketchUp.

These extensions can be found for any particular application like drawing or 3D printing and some industry specified tools for architecture, interior design, construction and many more. So basically in this Extension Warehouse people can do the following things:

  • Users can search extensions by name or as per the functionality.
  • They can also install various extensions with a single click of a button.

Here are some steps explained that will describe how the users can use the extensions or tools on their hunt for the perfect extension for the model:

  • At first users have to go to the Extension Warehouse, then they have to type the name of an extension or graphic search terms in the Search box and click the Search button. Or, users can go to the Categories or Industries area to click an option; a page of search results will appear.
  • If users want to refine the search results more, they need to select one or more filters in the sidebar on the left; the Extension Warehouse will filter the search results after selecting the checkbox. After applying a filter it will appear at the top of the sidebar where users can see quickly before applying other filters to the search results.
  • For changing the sorted search results, users can select an option from the drop-down list in the upper right of the search results page. By default, the results will get sorted by application which users can change as per creation date or popularity or alphabetically by title or author.
  • Clicking an extension’s title will help to open its extension details page and if users can find the right extension and want to install it, they can do it by Adding Extensions to SketchUp option. To browse more, there are two more options left which are: 1) Starting a new search in the Search box and 2) In the sidebar of statistics on the right, click any category, industry, SketchUp version, operating system or language to see any other search results related to that item.
