"Extension Inspection: SketchFX ”

Component Finder is a new extension that can easily manage users’ component libraries and help them to place them on the hard drive to manage all the information well.

Aaron Dietzen is a passionate designer in SketchUp who has done many videos in SketchUp Live about SketchUp Skill Builder and made many video tutorials to describe them.

About Aaron Dietzen: Aaron Dietzen is mainly seen in various SketchUp Live or any of the Skill Builder videos or been on the SketchUp forum, that means Aaron is fond of SketchUp and serving as a SketchUp employee for two years with more than ten years in the software. He is more than just a simple Trimble employee; he is a true SketchUp fan. He spends his free time in designing things in SketchUp and loves adventurous works.

Aaron has shared various designing ideas and important tips to utilize various features of SketchUp, in this article we are going to discuss about a new method of using Styles with SketchFX. .

SketchFX: It applies a series of visual effects one after another in a bottom down order and it has three types of effects:

  • Image: SketchFX can generate an image from various sources like file, SketchUp scene, a particular style or may be a constant color and images can be affected by child effects.
  • Filter: SketchFX can modify an image with its particular properties and it can be an image child or can affect all the above effects
  • Mask: SketchFX hides or views only some areas of an image.

Styles is a wonderful method to modify the look of every model but it is not enough every time as sometime more than the simple thing is needed and here SketchFX from Fluid woks where people can take styles to a new level and can get further processing graphics right out of SketchUp. SketchFX gives control to the users over a total heap of effects that can be layered on their SketchUp model and also allows them to create visuals that would easily need them to arouse their favorite photo editing software.

Types of SketchFX: SketchFX has two different flavors, one is SketchFX Pro and another is SketchFX EX, here is some information about them below-

  • SketchFX Pro: SketchFX Pro is a faster visualization plugin for SketchUp and it is simple to learn. It can be learnt in just one click; with a click users can create visually powerful illustrations of 3d models, choosing a range of many artistic styles.
  • SketchFX EX: SketchFx EX has all the features of SketchFX Pro and adds support of rendering animations.
While starting SketchFX, one can find a single button that will help to apply all the default effect and will show the window where all the additional features of SketchFX will be founded. There are a set of pre made drawings or styles to apply on the models like pencil sketches, coloring effects etc. and while applying any of the effects the work of SketchFX will get started. After applying effect there will open a box with changeable effects like any other photo editing tool where some options to change the modeling effects are (like blur, adjusting saturation and brightness, putting light etc.) used on the image to give it a new look.
The difference of SketchFX with other photo editing software is that it includes some combined effects that help to give a neat look in the model and more than that, each of these items in the list can be individually on and off to put effects. The items have more individual actions in their drop down options which can be named later and each individual will put an effect on the model, it is a fun thing to do. People can also apply various effects in a time and all of them will show clearly on the model without any mess which is a huge progress of this software. It also helps to show some details of mechanic drawings, though SketchFX misses some extra details but also adds some other information in the model which can’t be found anywhere. SketchFX is an easier way to show and change different details of a model.
About SketchUp: SketchUp or Google SketchUp is mainly a 3D modeling computer program that is used for a broad range of drawing applications used by architects, interior designer, landscape architects, civil and mechanical engineers, film and video game designers also. SketchUp can be getting as a freeware version named SketchUp Make and a paid version with many more extra benefits called SketchUp Pro. SketchUp is software from Trimble Company and there is an online library of free model congregations and 3D Warehouse to which users can add other models; besides that, the program has drawing layout functionality with variable ‘styles’, supports third-party ‘plug-in’ programs hosted on the Extension Warehouse to supply other abilities and enables placement of its models in Google Earth.
As SketchUp users are most of architects, designers, builders, makers and engineers etc. who works hard to give a nice shape to our physical world, they need great tools to do the work. SketchUp is in mission to bring their best to produce some great tools for drawing as drawing is the key thing of the SketchUp users. They draw to search ideas, to identify the things and to show other people their work that they do with love and love to build; SketchUp understands it truly and trying to improve their software day by day.

"Managing Component Library with Component Finder ”

Component Finder is a new extension that can easily manage users’ component libraries and help them to place them on the hard drive to manage all the information well.

Justin Geis: Justin Geis is the founder of The SketchUp Essentials and started using SketchUp while he was working as a general contractor in 2008 and after using it he found that SketchUp is extremely powerful that he just started to use it in his personal works also. Then he started The SketchUp Essentials as a place where he could share his ideas of using SketchUp easily through some tutorials and tips to help other users controlling the power of 3D Modeling in everyday lives.

In this article we are going to discuss about an extension from the folks over at FlexTools to manage any SketchUp component model collections on the computer.

Component Finder Functions: This extension is designed in a way that will help users to organize and manage their component library on their hard drive. It is seen that many people have started modifying a library of components that they use across various different models but they really haven’t found any extension that seriously can help them guiding those libraries. The Component Finder Functions will help them to arrange and manage those components in a right order.

The working way of this component is simple, at first the extension has to be downloaded from the FlexTools website by clicking the download button and putting a value that users are willing to pay for the extension. But they want to download the free version, one has to simply type in $0 and click the “I want this” title button. Clicking this button allow the users to download the extension file for installation. After installing the extension, it will show up as a toolbar within the model; having a license for the FlexTools the toolbar will be seen longer but the magnifying glass icon will open up the ComponentFinder Window.

  • The ComponentFinder allows users to add various folders to the list which can be controlled and searched within. The first folder can be added by clicking within the window and controlling the folder need to add and then click the option, “Select Folder”. After clicking the option, it will help users to add the folder to their list.
  • There are two navigation models within ComponentFinder; one is flat view that allows users to view all the components within a folder indifferent of subfolder. The other one is Nav view which allows users to browse the folder structure within a folder.
  • Users also can able to add many different folders by simply clicking the folder at the top of the page and adding the new location.
  • There is also a search bar that helps users to search specific keywords within any open folders.
  • The magnifying glass icon allows users to create their preview files larger or smaller within their folder list.
  • When the users click on the little hard drive button, it will open up the location of the selected folder on the hard drive.
  • Users can save a selected component to a folder by simply selecting it in their model and then need to click the plus button to save it to a location of their choice.
  • The up and down buttons help the users to adjust the layout of their different folders.
  • The minus button helps to minimize the folder previews to adjust the folder names.
  • To delete or remove a folder just click the “x” button to remove it from the list.
  • Users can access other options by right click on the objects within the folders and there they can do many things like opening the containing folder as a separate tab, renaming files, replacing files and updating them out of the models and deleting objects.

Using Tape Measure Tool in SketchUp

The Tape Measure Tool in SketchUp is used in SketchUp to scale or measure between the points and also it is useful to create construction lines. This construction lines are work as referral geometry in SketchUp. Users can also re-size any group or the whole model by using this Tape Measure Tool. In SketchUp, along with Tape Measure Tool, the Protractor tool and the Measurements box are allowed to model accurately different things, those are:

a. Tape Measure Tool is used to scale a distance and fix exact guide lines or points.
b. The Protocol Tool can use to scale angles and fix an exact angled guide line.
c. The Measurements box waits to accept an exact value after using any kind of tool.

Under the Tape Measure Tool the things can find are:

a. Getting Started Toolbar
b. Construction Toolbar
c. Large Tool Set Toolbar
d. Tools menu on the menu bar
e. Tools palette

This article will describe all the way to use Tape Measure tool, its speed and working areas and how easily it can make a perfect modeling.

1. Getting started with the Tape Measure tool: The Tape Measure Tool is found in the Tools menu of SketchUp or can get through some toolbars such as Getting Started, Construction or large Toolset Toolbar. Without all this there is the simple way to start the Tape Measure Tool by using the shortcut key T. After entering the tool the cursor automatically get the shape of a Tape Measure icon which has 2 measuring modes. The Guide Create mode will automatically activated after launching the tool and can be seen by the cursor’s figure. Users can also switch between Guide Create and Measure mode by using the CTRL key.

2. Using Measure Mode in SketchUp: This method is useful in accounting the measurements from a point to various points, ESC key is used to create new measuring point. This mode scales the whole model and using SketchUp’s Inference engine with arrow keys can change the measuring direction. Measure Mode can resize the whole model and a single object also. To resize them a group or component has to edit at first and then using the Tape Measure tool in Measure mode can resize the edited object.

3. Using Guide Create mode in SketchUp: This mode in the Tape Measure Tool is used to plan guide lines and points in SketchUp to firm draw in the workspace and various methods can apply for guiding drawings where the drawing can be done. Such as, A) infinite Guide Lines; it generally creates for gliding on an edge in SketchUp and can be created with double click. The distance between the lines can be measured only by entering a value against it. These lines can be arranged using array commands and create by placing a guide at the minimum distance and using the Move tool for copying the guide. B) Guide points; Guide lines can be ended with a construction point, at first an endpoint is picked after that measured direction and length will pick up. The endpoint is like the forcing tool into guide point mode that can create guide point at anywhere. Updated SketchUp’s inference engine knows every points to infer and combining with the Tape Measure Tool with it users can create all kind of guide lines and points in a moment.

4. Deleting guide lines in SketchUp: The Select tool or the Erase tool help to remove the guide lines and points and areas.

5. Managing and deleting guide lines in SketchUp using Extensions: Using any kind of extension can make the way of managing and deleting guide lines simple and TIG’s Construction Line Delete via Context extension is available. It is useful as it can expand SketchUp with added more options by a right click on an existing Guide line. But this extension need to install in SketchUp and can found in the SketchUp’s ExtensuionStore. To install it got to the Search feature and type guide, the extension will appear with an install option just click on it and it will be installed. Installing and using this extension can give users access to more delete and layer management options to Guide lines and points through a context menu. There are more options find here to manage the guide lines and points.

The Material Dialog Box in SketchUp

SketchUp has tools and plugins that add a touch of reality to the design. The presentation of SketchUp distinguishes the application from others as it successfully brings the reality of 3D design to you. The material box, as the name defines, gives color effects to the design. Material dialog box appears differently in the windows and Mac versions.

To open the material dialog box: Windows > materials

Generally, two types of materials (colors and textures) are available in the SketchUp dialog box and you can apply either one as per your need.

Colors:

Solid colors are available in the dialog box and you cannot use the gradients. You can make the color of your choice.

Textures:

Texture in SketchUp is a small image that is applied to the face of your design until the face gets completely covered by the image. For example, if you want to design a brick face, you need to click the brick icon image several times to fill up the surface. There are many textures available in SketchUp, and they indeed add an interesting touch to the design. If the already existed list seems not enough, you can download more from Google SketchUp website. You can also download paid textures and can make your own format.

More about SketchUp materials:

• You can make the materials translucent by adjusting the opacity slider. This adds a clear visibility to your model in the Windows.
• Textures have transparent areas also that allow you to see through the faces you are texturing on. The black spaces on the texture may look inappropriate, but they come up with a wide range of benefits.
• You can also edit a material as per your choice. This is basically the work of the advanced designers and they know how to handle the materials properly to make a perfect 3D model.
• Photo texturing is another thing that will help you get the model as per your expectation. You can apply photos instead of colors and textures to cover the surfaces of your design. This feature brings in a new change in the work flow and pushes the limits. Those building models for Google earth will take benefits from this feature.

These are the few things about dialog box that make your designer easier and simpler. This feature gives your 3D design a complete sense.

The boundary of architectural visualization at Gensler

It is literary a global architecture, design and planning firm that has near about 44 branches and more than 5000 professionals and spread their network across Asia, Europe, Australia and the Middle East. The firm was founded by Mr. Arthur Gensler Jr. and Associates Inc., known as Gensler in 1965 at San Francisco and in recent they are been serving more than 3500 active clients in every industry. Gensler designers are aimed to renovate the places more inspiring, more consistent and more influenced where people live, work and play. Gensler is planned for supporting their clients all over the world at every step of design cycle from primary strategy and design planning through performance and management.

In this article we will come to know about the creative works and system and management about architectural visualization of Gensler from Scott DeWoody who is the creative media manager at Gensler and has the experience to work with countless clients such as NVIDIA Corporation, ExxonMobil, Shell Oil Company, BP, City Center Las Vegas and many more.

Scott’s Role at Gensler: As a creative media manager Scott has to manage the rendering workflows, supervise visualization technologies, give training to the newcomers, and work on documentation over several things and research and development into new technologies like VR/AR/MR etc. Lot of roles really for him, but this is not the last as he as to act as a consultant on a huge number of projects and find out the best solution for any problem that can appear.

As per the words of Scott, he and other employees can get really big possibilities of working with various kinds of clients and projects that provide them enough experience for being compatible in every field. Scott has been working in Gensler for 10 years and serving various kinds of clients everyday which give him lot of experience and knowledge and he enjoys his work a lot.

Design tools: As Gensler is an architectural, designing and planning firm so the employers have to work with various tools that can make their work better in the less time. Scott says that they use the tools like SketchUp, Rhino, and Revit and for a degree use 3ds Max, along this there main visualization tool is V-Ray. The detailed works are done using the Unity and Unreal gaming tools and create some mutual visualization. Without this I Ray and other apps are used and Deadline tool is used to produce a global render in the network resources.

Process of producing powerful and pleasing imagery: Though producing imagery is different for different project and different designers use different tools but in general V-Ray is used by all in every design as a baseline. This tool has been using by the designers from a long decade and with the newest versions they can create render while continuously working in a project without stopping anywhere. V-Ray is enough submissive for the artist to work on taking things in conceptual or diagrammatical way or working in the photo-realistic method to get a new view on rendering quality. The latest attempt they scaled into the designs is the materials with using a system named ‘Avail’. This is especially designed for the AEC industry and has over 1500 V-Ray materials and a shared library for the designers. Other Software named Substance Designer which is a mechanical material builder is used to make any kind of virtual thing like carpet, wood, stone or anything to give a real look. The whole library is connected with all the offices across the world where everyone uses the same palette to get their first renderings off the ground.

A ‘standard workflow’: A standard workflow means an upgraded and useful workflow that is common in every field and every office of Gensler; it is the SketchUp and Microsoft. SketchUp help to dive in and mass out their ideas quickly to a downloadable textures and speed up the work, on the other hand the retailer dept. use SketchUp with Microsoft to present their design in the app on-the-fly. After that they use a mixture of Fuzor and Enscape to utilize a real-time rendering, besides these they use 3ds Max Interactive, Revit etc. also. For the game engine they have different level of thinking, all the designers want to make the gaming engines quick for modeling and want different outputs and recently working on it.

Collaboration: Scott has a goal to make a firm platform of rendering across the board so for rendering he uses V-Ray’s upgrading version for all platforms. V-Ray gives him a firm platform for every design and solving problems, using materials or adding extra features.

Future of design visualization: Real-time rendering is becoming popular and accessible for all and people are crazy for it but in the other hand the ray-tracing is also gaining attentions. Though they are two separate worlds, but Scott has a gut feeling that in future they can make a combination that will change the future of design visualization.

Scott’s experience with Mixed Reality: Scott had some very good experience while working in this project as they worked with SketchUp viewer for HoloLens and experienced many things about proofing of concept, drooping the custom designed bridge etc. in the real-world environment etc.

The team is recently working on various projects and looking forward to enhance the IoT experience in designing and hoping to take the technology to the next level. Gensel is extremely happy with their employees and convinced also that tools like SketchUp, Rhino, and VR are helping them a lot to grab something big in future.

nz_Descendants – The most updated sketchup extension

Natale Zappia has developed nz_Descendants. This is the newest sketchup plugin that is compatible with SketchUp 2016, SketchUp 2017, SketchUp 2018.

The plugin can be used for diverse industries like Architecture, Construction, Engineering, Film & Stage, Heavy Civil, Interior Design, Kitchen & Bath, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, wood working etc.

The plugin has same functionality like PushPull tool in sketchup. With this plugin, the users will be able to extrude various faces to a distantly selected reference length. It produces the consequential shapes into an independent group keeping the original face/object as it is. This plugin can function on several faces instantly.

The plugin saves huge time and allows for modelling in a non-destructive way.

This convenience makes it possible for generating similitudes and modelling in a non-destructive fashion if applied with Sketchup: SolidTools.

Similitude:

By re-applying accessible dimensions, it is possible to generate self-similar objects which at the same time as not fractals yet sustain a subliminal sense of unity to enhance a project.

Non-Destructive Modeling:

If this plugin is utilized along with Sketchup: Solid Tools, the users can model maintaining their original source objects intact. Once related elements are produced, reunite or manipulated them with Sketchup:SolidTool and still sustain your original sources if it is necessary.

It is mostly effective while dealing with joinery, or any situation where a surface can become an interrelated element. Apply nz_Desendants to generate the subsequent/adjacent element easily.

The renowned plug-in developer Chris Fullmer has created CLF OnScreen Display, the newest sketchup plugin that is compatible with SketchUp 7, SketchUp 8, SketchUp 2013, SketchUp 2014, SketchUp 2015, SketchUp 2016, SketchUp 2017, SketchUp 2018.

This script demonstrates the position of cursor and screen as well as the name of the chosen component. If there does not exist any chosen component, it labels what is selected (group, face, edge, 3d polyline, etc).

This tool can be activated from Plugins> OnScreen Display. After moving the cursor, left click and hold the mouse to obtain the OnScreen Display. When a component is chosen, it will demonstrate the instance name and the definition name. The definition is what is normally viewable in the component browser.

Watch the following video for online demonstration of the plugin.

The plugin is available in extension warehouse extensions.sketchup.com
