The Material Dialog Box in SketchUp

SketchUp has tools and plugins that add a touch of reality to the design. The presentation of SketchUp distinguishes the application from others as it successfully brings the reality of 3D design to you. The material box, as the name defines, gives color effects to the design. Material dialog box appears differently in the windows and Mac versions.

To open the material dialog box: Windows > materials

Generally, two types of materials (colors and textures) are available in the SketchUp dialog box and you can apply either one as per your need.

Colors:

Solid colors are available in the dialog box and you cannot use the gradients. You can make the color of your choice.

Textures:

Texture in SketchUp is a small image that is applied to the face of your design until the face gets completely covered by the image. For example, if you want to design a brick face, you need to click the brick icon image several times to fill up the surface. There are many textures available in SketchUp, and they indeed add an interesting touch to the design. If the already existed list seems not enough, you can download more from Google SketchUp website. You can also download paid textures and can make your own format.

More about SketchUp materials:

• You can make the materials translucent by adjusting the opacity slider. This adds a clear visibility to your model in the Windows.
• Textures have transparent areas also that allow you to see through the faces you are texturing on. The black spaces on the texture may look inappropriate, but they come up with a wide range of benefits.
• You can also edit a material as per your choice. This is basically the work of the advanced designers and they know how to handle the materials properly to make a perfect 3D model.
• Photo texturing is another thing that will help you get the model as per your expectation. You can apply photos instead of colors and textures to cover the surfaces of your design. This feature brings in a new change in the work flow and pushes the limits. Those building models for Google earth will take benefits from this feature.

These are the few things about dialog box that make your designer easier and simpler. This feature gives your 3D design a complete sense.

Best SketchUp Practices for Exceptional Designs

SketchUp application has become a household name in the 3D designing. Everyone with an imaginative spree loves this application for its simple approach and easy-to-use functions. There are a few practices that SketchUp users must follow to get the best out of many. These practices involve simple things that you need to maintain while designing. Nothing stringent in rules, these practices are based on the designing habit of an expert designer. The content discusses further the practices and rules that tell you how to create flawless designs simply.

• Make your own template and adjust the program setting: Making your own template and adjusting program settings as per your use help you design in a comfort environment – a home like feeling where everything is in order. So keeps you satisfied as well as relax you while solving a complex puzzle of designing.

• Save often and early: This is another best practice that ensures you design stays unharmed. You can save the file even before you start designing. This allows SketchUp to activate the autosave functions that save your file and make necessary backups.

• Group faces after they become a logical object: In SketchUp, separating objects from each other is not possible. If the object face touches another, then they will remain sticky and hard to move them separately. This is why group faces are there that allows you to make a group component after completing the design.

• Use component for repeating objects: If you need an object that has various uses in your designing, use component program rather than groups. It allows you to work smoothly on SketchUp.

• Precise Models designing: The SketchUp precision modeling tool ensures that a model is designed accurately and flawlessly. This tool eliminates the ‘crooked geometry’ or gaps in your design. Texturing and other modeling tasks become harder if models are not developed in a proper way. Use this application for a pleasurable workflow without any hurdles.

• Polygon count should be low: Since SketchUp is a Polygon based modeler, every curve (triangles and rectangles) you design contains a certain amount of polygon shapes. The faster work of the graphic card relies on the low polygon shape. Display card works extensively if you use many polygon shapes in your design. The best way to avoid this problem is that use the modeling circle or arcs with minimum edges. You can also use component for displaying curve objects to reduce the problem.

• Application of proxy component: If your design needs a high-polygon object like a tree, then you must use component to keep the polygon count low. Make sure that the components you are choosing are at the same location and it must coordinate with the axes.

SketchUp applications brought a big change in the designing. The practices mentioned above tells you the basic rules to use SketchUp to get a proper designing spree.

Tips to apply sun light in a interior scene with vray for sketchup

This sketchup video tutorial briefly explains the procedures for applying sun light in interior. Sketchup Pro 2017 is used to create the model and the rendering is done by vray 3.4 sketchup.

With V-Ray Sun and Sky, it is possible to perfectly illustrate the sun and sky for reproducing the Sun and Sky easily. They are projected to work jointly and react to the angle and direction of the sun.
To obtain the sun location, in click "Windows" in the main menu, choose "Model Info", then choose "Location". It will facilitate to choose a location of the sun. The time and the day in the "Shadow Setting" should be controlled properly.
To utilize the sun perfectly, it is essential to apply it together with the Physical Camera. To retain the characteristics of the model, the sun should be held adjacent to its exact intensity.
To prevent the deep brightness of the sun, it is necessary to form a perfect exposure of a scene with the physical camera. With the physical camera, it is also possible to precisely capture the exact colors of the sky as well.
The properties of the sun in V-Ray for SketchUp are managed in combination with the Physical Sky properties under the Texture Editor for GI(Skylight) under Environment render options. Here various controls are available to modify the appearance and affect of the sun.

To get best result, use the physical camera with the sun, access the V-Ray Options and in the Camera rollout activate the Physical Camera. To ascertain the proper exposure, it is required to perform a quick render of the image. If the image becomes too bright, or overexposed, then modify the F-stop, shutter speed, or ISO value to recover.

It is advised to view the color values in Float format, to facilitate finding out the perfect brightness of your image. It is viewed by right-clicking and holding anywhere in the frame.

How to generate gears in sketchup with circle, offset & rotate tools

In this sketchup video tutorial, Justin Geis provides some useful sketchup tips for generating gears with the use of circle, offset and rotate tools inside sketchup. You don’t have to use any sketchup extension for this purpose.
Some useful tips :-
While going to produce geometry like this, initially you have to focus on the number of segments in your circles. SketchUp does not have the ability to draw “pure” curves. As an alternative, the curves are developed with a set of individual segments, which are arranged by providing a number with the circle tool turned on. The number of teeth in your gear can be modified by fixing the number of segments in your circle.

As for instance, let’s draw 2 circles maintaining the similar radius, one with 24 sides, and one with 36 sides.
If the offset tool is applied to generate a slightly larger circle and draw in some teeth, it is possible to employ the rotate tool to copy the teeth around the radius. Here, the circle having more segments contain more teeth.
As soon as the circle is drawn, draw a slightly larger circle by applying offset tool. After that, draw lines to the equivalent segment points to start a tooth. The scale tool can be applied to curtail this line (hold the control key for constant scaling). It is the perfect time to choose your circle, right click and choose make center. This will arrange a control point at the center of your circle that should be applied to copy your tooth in rotate mode.

As soon as you’ve detailed out one tool, the rotate tool can be used in copy mode to produce the rest of your teeth. You may require to get into and remove some left over geometry.

Now, go in and detail out the remaining gear. While accomplishing this, it’s vital to recognize the math of how you’re parting your gear up.
If it is required to draw 6 holes in your gear, just split the number of degrees in a circle (360) with the number of holes required by you for creation. After that, it is possible to draw your hole as per your choice, then generate copies along the number of degrees you worked out.

After completing this, just remove your leftover geometry and with the use of the push/pull tool extrude your gear into 3d.

How to apply domelight and HDRI in vray 3.4 sketchup to set sky

This sketchup v-ray tutorial is based on the process to set sky with domelight and HDRI in vray 3.4 sketchup.
Dome Light produces simple, artifact-free image-based lighting with significance sampling of HDR images. This method makes light tracing and global illumination process accurate.
The VRay Dome Light belongs to a V-Ray specific light source plug-in that is applied to generate image base lighting setup.
It is available in v-ray toolbar as dome light icon. Just click on it and then click any place in the scene to arrange the dome light.
HDRI means High Dynamic Range Imaging. It is a method that creates a bigger span or range of luminance amid the light and dark areas of an image.

In V-Ray for SketchUp, the HDRI can be applied both as a background and an IBL (Image Based Lighting). If HDRI is applied as background, just load it in the Environment Rollout/Background. If it is required to use it as an IBL, then just load this HDRI in the GI (Skylight). It will transform to a light source then to illuminate the scene.
