Some basic native tools in sketchup and their functionalities

Sketchup contains its own native tools which can be used to navigate, generate, and edit a 3D model. Besides, it also contains supplementary plugins and extensions. These plugins can perform a specific task that native tools lack.

Given below, the detail lists of some vital native SketchUp tools :-

Navigation Tools: With the Navigation Tools, the users can move all around the SketchUp viewport. These tools can be managed by the mouse buttons or applying the shortcut keys.
The navigation tools are sub-categorized as follow :-
  • Zoom: It facilitates the users to be nearer or away from the object to be modeled with the scroll wheel of the mouse by moving it forward or backward. It is effective while viewing a minor detail or a general view in the 3D model. The quick shortcut key is “Z”.
    • Orbit: It allows orbiting the camera view by pressing and retaining the scroll wheel of the mouse. It is effective for analyzing the models from several angles. The quick shortcut key is “O”.
    • Pan: With the panning tool, it is possible to move devoid of losing the earlier perspective. It only arranges a vertical and horizontal movement and it is useful while framing a scene. To avail this tool, just hold the scroll wheel and press Shift simultaneously. For quick accessibility, press “H”.
Drafting Tools: Drafting Tools can be applied to generate something from the beginning. Drafting tools are sub-categorized as follow :-

• Line Tool: While design something in SketchUp, this tool is inevitable. It facilitates the users to produce any 2D surface by relating line segments. The lines are drawn in the X, Y and Z axis by the left click of the mouse. The quick shortcut key is “L“.
• Arc Tool: This tool not only draws a section from one point to another but also assign a third point to identify the arc curvature. The quick shortcut key is “A“.
• Eraser Tool: The main purpose of it is to rub out the unnecessary line segments. To apply it, just click with the left button of the mouse over any line. The quick shortcut key is “E“.

Editing Tools: SketchUp contains the following editing tools:

• Push Pull: It extrudes a 2D surface to transform it into a 3D shape. Just press “P” button to access it and place the cursor over the face according to your choice and then clicking the left button of the mouse for extruding.
• Scale: With this tool, it is possible to create any object selected bigger or smaller by applying a bounding box with some grips. Choose one grip and shift the cursor to scale your object. To make the scaling identical, choose the grips in the corners. The quick shortcut key is “S”.
• Move: Just press the “M” key and choose the object to be moved. The place you click in the object is considered as moving point. This prime objective of the tool is to adapt things in your model.
• Rotate: Just press the “Q” key and then clicking in the object to be rotated. The point you click on your object will be considered as the pivot point.
• Offset: It is used to create an equidistant line of any face. Just press “F” button and place your cursor on the line or surface to be offset. Then shift the cursor outside or inside as per your requirement, and finally provide a selected distance with the numeric pad.
• Follow Me: It extrudes a surface along any specified Path. Just choose the path to be worked with, then from the Edit toolbar, choose the “Follow me” tool. The surface to be extruded should be perpendicular to the selected guideline. By double-clicking to the surface, the extruded shape will be completed that follows the path direction.

Extensions: SketchUp also contains some native extensions which can be activated from the Toolbars available in the View menu.

• Sandbox Tools: This set of tools is suitable for terrain modeling from the beginning or from specified lines, like topographic curves for instance. It can produce a triangulated mesh that can be edited later as per requirements of your project.
• Solid Tools: It is only applicable with solids. They can be groups or components. It applies Boolean operations to integrate, subtract, split, intersect or trim one shape from another. It facilitates the users to generate more complex and cleaner models. It is available in the View menu in the toolbars section.

"Multiple Profiles can be handled by Follow Me extension"

SketchUp Warehouse is full of various wonderful and useful extensions and tools that make the design thing a lot easier, Follow Me is the newest of them with some unique features.

Aaron Dietzen this time comes with his new useful creation of importing and exporting via SketchUp Shop which is the newest thing for SketchUp users. This article will describe the whole process according to Aaron and his video tutorial where the new tool Follow Me Tool is introduced and Aaron is in love with this tool as it can be used as a substitute of Push/Pull tool.

About Follow Me Tool: The SketchUp Follow Me tool is the Pied Piper of 3D geometry as it leads a face with a path to build a 3D shape. Though this is the only thing this tool does but it has a pack of applications and enables the users for drawing difficult 3D models with only a few clicks. The Follow Me tool can find in many places in SketchUp like Tools menu, Edit toolbar, Large Tool Set toolbar and Tool palette (macOS).

Aaron has been using as a replica of Push/Pull tool and also as a modification tool; in his words though Push/Pull tool is great but while he wants to seep a molding profile around a room or round-off the corner of a table he can easily does with this tool. But there are lots of places when he finds difficulty to use this tool such as while working with a bunch of shapes and have them all follow the same path. Follow Me tool will do the work but with an unwilling way where lots of selecting, path picking, then Follow Me tool, and then again picking the profile etc. which will continue to the next shape again. So it is a time taking matter for everyone and Aaron tried to solve this problem with using some idea and through his video tutorial he has presented the whole matter well. This article is a little description of his taken steps and here is also the tutorial link for further help; so let’s begin:


Aaron has created a wonderful model where he has used a lot of shapes of different sizes and he has made all those shapes and sizes to follow a single path in one click. At first he has selected the path and then click on Follow Me icon; after clicking the exact work the tool does as it name replicates it created a whole Follow Me path on the selected areas. Again he did the same thing; selected the path and clicked the Follow Me tool to create another path from the shape and it will continue till the last shape gets completed under Follow Me path. Actually the shapes like circle or rectangular are made at the end of the Railing bar to make them able in using the Follow Me tool; he has created some little shapes there and he drew a rectangle over the first shape and then copy it through all the shapes that created another thing. He just used the Follow Me tool and clicked on the rectangular shape to make it a covered area. Next he took the top of the shape and deleted couple lines which created a followed path with detailed design. The same thing he has done with his next shape; like working with the stairs, he created inside and outside to make a voy, then copied the ‘N’ shape on the other side and repeated the whole process again.

Some unknown facts about follow me tool

In this exclusive sketchup video tutorial, Justin Geis, the renowned sketchup trainer, briefly explains some useful features and functions as well as applications of sketchup follow me tool.

The SketchUp Follow Me tool is the base of 3D geometry: Follow Me directs a face along a path to generate a 3D shape. However, it comprises of a bunch of applications and facilitates to draw complicated 3D models with some simple mouse clicks.

Follow Me is very effective for modeling finishing details that pursue a perimeter or edge, like crown molding or gutters. It also simplifies the task for modeling lathed objects, like a spindle, and curved vessels, like a bowl or a vase.

The follow me tool can be applied to extrude something like a pipe along the path. Just choose a path and apply the follow me tool to extrude something to the length of that path.

The follow me tool can be very effective when the paths contain numerous various lines on it.

The best way to utilize the follow me tool is to choose your path, then activate the tool and click on your object. It also functions along paths which go in a complete circle.
