How to use photo matching tool in sketchup to produce a model from any photo

Justein Geis, the renowned sketchup trainer, shows some useful tricks to generate a model out of any photo by applying in-built photo matching tool in sketchup.

This is one of the exclusive features of sketchup. By learning just one measurement, it is possible to generate a whole model.

Photo matching facilitates a modeler to model out of a photograph after importing it. The 3d perspective is matched from the photograph and thus the users get the ability to model over the image and get it to visually appear the same. From there, the modeler will be able to rotate around and model accordingly.

Process for Importing a Match Photo
While importing a match photo, just go to… Camera>Match New Photo...

On the other hand, you can go to.. File>Import, choose your photo and turn on the Use as New Match Photo option.

Process for modifying the Perspective Lines.

Once the photo is imported, it is necessary to fix your perspective lines. Your red lines will match lines on one face of your 3d object, and your green lines will match lines on another face. With the help of mouse button, zoom in and out to verify your lines are as precise as possible.

As soon as your lines are fixed, shift your origin point to a discernible place that is adjacent to you in the photograph. It will be the place from where the modeling will be started.

If you remember component bonus, you will also remember 2D and 3D tree and how it make and those beautiful woodwork, joints and roof. Now these components, mainly composed by the team sketchup have always been added to 3D warehouse.

In the sketchup 2015, it has been extended; glorified and standard component has been improved. Till now, 2800 individual content have been restored in 3D warehouse the repeated browsing reveals many collections. These theatres light are the best example.

The way to access of content is: 3D Warehouse Detailed Collections via SketchUp’s 3D Warehouse window (File > 3D Warehouse > Get Models) or via your web browser. These are all filled with information together with IFC attributes and metadata. They will always try exporting to Tekla BIMsight or Trimble Connect – both accept IFC files.

One can browse 3D warehouse for those contents. Special care has been taken to add relevant tags. The collections are electronics, cranes, jibs and cranes.

How SketchUp Originated and Activated

Many people ask what is sketch. Some artists believe in manual sketch and some have traditionally gone for digital. They generally use sketchup.

But there is a question that why it is sketchup? There could be many more, or why we use digital sketching pattern.

There is also the technique of manual sketching. Some people say it is now impractical, tough to learn.

The growing question is in the creative world that manual sketching now obsolete? What is the fundamental idea of the digital tool in the architectural design?

The three stage of architectural design:

• Schematic
• Development
• Documentation

There can be physical and mock-up model. The digital revolution, the primary design using pen or pencil, paper drawing, concept building into 2D and 3D can be presented.

Architects start to build up designs and make construction documents, but the schematic design procedure was not really computerized.

The changing scenario: 1960

The computer-aided design (CAD) started to originate a new direction to research, speedily applied to architectural business.

It became a commercial product for sale.

This is the age of personal computer. This is also the year where Autodesk started to work.

The computer-aided designs – architectural and engineering were started to come. The old generations of CAD programs stays mostly drafting tools on personal computers.

These things are prepared by the engineer, but they were typically not designers. They need architectural draft and design.

The changing scenario: 1999

The search was on for an alternative programme which is for architect. They also need CAD. But an an alternative programme was much of the requirement. Later @last Software was born and various sketching programme were developed.

The changing scenario: 2000

SketchUp was born in August 2000. Now it can be said that SketchUp is easy-running software. A 2D drawing can be alternate into 3D drawing. But more importantly, it can be done sharply. This is an award winning programme.

The changing scenario: 2006

Google bought it in 2006. Then it was known as Google SketchUp. SketchUp is based onAutoCAD – function, icons, form-creating, manipulation and rendering command.

Skill, experience, easy to use, simplicity, interface, accessibility are they main factor.

The programme has a tri-parted design process -- schematic sketch design, mass study, presentation for alternative design. It can be implemented in easy process – interior design, rendering and construction sketch. But it cannot cope with complex sketch and realistic rendering.
