SketchUp for Film and Stage Visualization

In the past we had noticed extensive application of SketchUp for architecture, engineering and construction sectors. But now-a-days with the constant revolution in digital filmmaking, the rising popularity for stereoscopic content inside the entertainment industry and utilization of computer graphics, the SketchUp software is considered as a useful guidance system for Art Directors, Filmmakers, Graphic/Film Designers, Production Designers, Cinematographers and Design Professionals engaged in Film, Stage and Television industries.

Inside SketchUp there are some user-friendly and flexible tools which can aid in the process of generating 3D (three dimensional look) to model in 3D precisely. The director, producers, art director, set decorator, director of photography, designers and others get the ability to share their ideas in 3D from props, displays, storyboard to complete set design and walk through’ the set before making final design. The designers can hand off the model to the concerned art director and set designers. They can disintegrate the model and apply it as the basis for working construction drawings which will create the set or props accordingly.

The designers can also take more up-to-date decision and communicate project features with the team easily.

The SketchUp can provide great assistance for storyboarding. If the 3D models of the set or general location are created before the formation of story board, it will be very easy to generate 2D props and actors and position them into the scene and preview in context through the camera. After that export images to form a series of traditional storyboards.

Most interesting application of SketchUp is to make the backdrop, set and circumstances and then draw realistic images beyond the storyboards to substitute for the actors or props. Here SketchUp is utilized to model the basic shapes & structures of those components with precise scalling to ensure the exact positioning of such components in the set or the exact scalling for creating them so that the camera can applied to capture them as the storyboards portray.

Besides, the visualization characteristic of SketchUp facilitates stereoscopic pre-visualisation in a synchronized way in film and entertainment industry to view the project before it is actually created. The amendment for design is performed quickly. The software allows you to make sets and characters, direct, shoot and edit your movies.

Filmmakers have applied SketchUp to work out problematical scenes, camera moves, and set designs. The SketchUp is utilized in some renowned films like Avatar, Transformer, Star Trek, upcoming Dracula 3D many other blockbusters have taken the help of SketchUp to produce the fantasy like atmosphere in the movies.

In some 3D movies the SketchUp was applied to generate special effects with its high-end rendering programme. The SketchUp can make colorized rendering of the scenes to view it comfortably.

The film professionals find SketchUp most useful for designing a set. SketchUp can smoothly visualize all construction, electrical, lighting, artwork, paint, etc. facilitating the creation of complete stage and set by making fine adjustments infinitely before it is physically built.

There exist some extensions for SketchUp which may also be called as Film & Stage plug-in with SketchUp. These types of plug-in/extensions were built up to facilitate the camera behavior to be modified precisely to characterize the proper through-the-lens visualization of SketchUp models. The Extension offers a visual approach to get rid of multifaceted spatial design troubles. The Film & Stage plug-in consists of an advanced camera tool and various pre-viz components. Select from an extensive collection of cameras, lights, dollies, cranes, grips, characters and more. The Art directors & Cinematographer utilize SketchUp camera plug-in to pre-visualize shots and scenes in SketchUp before filming and walk around & control the aspect ratios, different camera lenses and positions to obtain the proper shot. The Cinematographers can make sure that the camera positioning is achievable physically on the film stage.

A virtual camera is created within the Film & Stage plug-in with which Cinematographers, Production Designers, Art Directors and other design professionals can go with diverse scenarios for camera positioning and pan/tilt settings and transform camera focal-length and intraocular distance and view all these in stereo/3D. Once the cameras are set up, the production designers can easily locate the accurate height, tilt angle and focal length for each one. The designers can also carry out tilt, dolly, truck and pedestal moves to reproduce the action of a real camera. They will be capable of producing detailed floor plans and measurements to position the real cameras fast and competently at the time of rehearsal and main shoot.

The SketchUp film stage plug-in also contains a huge library with filming-specific components like dollies, cranes, grips, characters, lights and cameras. These components are very useful for making a 3D scene or stage visualization.

SketchUp for Film and Stage Visualization

The SketchUp can also be fruitful for making storyboards and animatics, set diagrams and/or technical documentation of sets, props and rigs etc. While planning a shot of any film production, perform with the storyboard into the 3rd dimension to view the necessity of positioning your camera to avail the proper shot.

There are several persons like Gaffers, Production Designers, Producers etc. engaged with the production of a film. A Gaffer can apply SketchUp to communicate its lighting plans. Production designers may utilize it for designing a set. Producers may find the software useful with equipment rental houses to find out the requirements for type of lens, lighting and camera support. A DP may apply the Shadow tool inside SketchUp to reproduce shadows falling on the set at different moments of the day or for preparation of plan with lens packages. SketchUp also contains a broad library with lighting, cameras, lenses and support equipment useful users, a library of popular lighting, cameras, lenses and support equipment is available for users to create their individual set-ups.

After the addition of street view imagery in SketchUp 7.1, many film professionals find it very useful for their work as street view data from an un-modeled areas facilitates them to model the scene adjacent to a real-world place in which the staging for film will be happened. The designers and cinematographers can trace distant places or more exhilarating places for filming which are close to the planned location of a shoot before now.

So we can say SketchUp is a blessing for Film professionals. Some renowned designers like Tyruben Ellingson (Lead Vehicle Designer for Cameron’s AVATAR), Production Designer James Bissel (Zack Snyder’s ’300′), and the production design/ special effects team on Chris Nolan’s INCEPTION apply SketchUp successfully in their projects to make storyboards, digital lay-outs & virtual models for commercials, films, and visual effects.

New Features Of Google Sketchup 8

Sketchup is a 3D modeling software owned by Google. This 3D software is used by professionals from all walks of life. Generally it is used for placing 3D models in Google Earth.

Sketchup Warehouse enables users to view & download various forms of 3D models. Till date, eight versions of sketchup have released. The latest version Sketchup 8 was launched on Sept. 1’2010. The important Sketchup 8 features are:-

  • Geo-localization of models in sketchup:- The latest sketchup has Google Map built in it. If we create or download any 3D model from sketchup, then we can easily geo-localize it by this sketchup 8.
  • Coloured & 3D view of the terrains of the geo locations:- In google map, we generally see non coloured & one dimensional view of the geolocation of any product. But for the first time, in sketchup 8, we can view the land relief of the geolocation of our model coloured & in 3D.
  • The Building Maker:- The heading tells that this sketchup has building making feature. We can add buildings to google map by this feature. Its very efficient. We can use this feature to create buildings from our models.

Five years have passed since Google has acquired Sketchup from the company @Last Software. Since then, they are periodically updating their software. The latest update was the “SpaceNavigator (a computer mouse which supports 3D software)” support.

Also this sketchup version has a plugin which supports 3D animation.

SketchUp in Landscape Designing

Like any great undertaking, you need to have some idea of what you are doing at any given time. Landscaping plans are no exception. The tricky part is getting around to all the various landscaping plans and options that there could potentially be, and of course, visualizing the whole event in your minds eye can be challenging.

Building Your Blueprints the first and most obvious way to plan for what you need to do is to draw a sketch. Sit down with a pencil, and yes, it must be a pencil and a blank piece of paper. Block your house and any other obstacles that you might not be able to work around, and then - go to town! Draw something, erase it, try again - your landscaping plans are just that - plans and as with any plans you need to do some brainstorming before you can get anywhere with it.

Your landscaping plans should probably go through several drafts before you come up with a pretty solid idea of what you want. That is not to say that you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you know exactly what you want your design to look like, although you might. The premise of the exercise is just to help you visualize, brainstorm, and work through some of the potential options for your landscaping plans. But, what about for those of us who are artistically challenged; whose stick figures most closely resemble H.P Lovecraft's nightmares? Worry not - google.com offers a free utility called SketchUp. SketchUp it can create 3D models for Google Earth, another utility. SketchUp lets you put into a 3D visualization exactly how your landscaping plans will look.

This has definite benefits over the pencil and paper method, but at the same it can limit creativity and can be frustrating for those people who are not technology-compatible (get the joke?). However, it is another option for creating those wonderful landscaping plans which will be your first and arguably most important step to having your landscaping dreams come true. Outside of that, landscaping plans involving drawing, calling contractors, finding the best price for exactly what you want, deciding on plants, layout, colors, form, textures - the whole nine yards. That's why making your landscaping plans is so important because the project can quickly become overwhelming and not all that enjoyable, which one would hope it would be if you are trying to do it yourself.

Blog: How to Create Virtual Model in SketchUp

In every sphere of life you may have to create a virtual model of any design. For a student, a virtual model can be useful for his or her school project. If you want to make a house of your own then a virtual model is important to see the floor plan and get a better understanding. For a designer, interior decorator or an architect always seek the help of the virtual model for the success of their profession. Though there are various tools for 3D designing. SketchUp is known as the most user friendly and easy to access 3D drawing tool from the house of the Google.

Making a free virtual model lays the foundation for creating entire scenes and environments, which you then use for games or simulations. With some simple tools you can easily draw a model in SketchUp. You can rotate and view the details of the model from all sides. SketchUp gives flexibility and freedom to make change in the model. You can add suitable color material and texture in the model according to your choice. In the following part there is a short guideline on how to make models on SketchUp.

Make a Model with Sketchup:

1. Open SketchUp, which is the easiest free CAD program to learn. SketchUp can create only simple animations for evaluating a model. In contrast, Blender and Art of Illusion can animate walking characters. Also, SketchUp lacks a full rendering engine; models you render with it don't look as realistic but there are some plug ins to fill up the void. You'll make a model house with SketchUp.

2. Click the top toolbar's square icon to enter the mode for drawing squares. A square forms the base of the model house.

3. Drag a square on the ground plane, then press "P" to run the "Push/Pull" tool.

4. Click the square and drag upward to turn the square into a box.

5. Press "Control-C," then "Control-V" to make a copy of the box, which will form the roof.

6. Click the second box's top face, then press "S" to run the scale tool. Drag any two opposing edges of the box's top face until they touch each other. This forms the wedge shape of the roof.

7. Press "M" to run the "Move" tool, then drag the roof atop the house to complete the house model.
