How to use CAD files in SketchUp

Trimble SketchUp is probably the most popular 3D modeling software among people who aren’t hardcore professionals. Its ease of use, easy-to-understand toolset and flexibility have fanned the fumes of popularity for SketchUp. Most of the time, we are happy to be working with the default SketchUp files (.skp). But sometimes we may need to use files from other applications into SketchUp.
For example, quite often architects, construction professionals or engineers need to use their professional CAD software flies inside Trimble SketchUp. Most commonly, we see the need for importing AutoCAD files, like DWG or DXF, for this purpose. Today we will see how to properly import and use CAD files into SketchUp.
Compatibility
Before you whisk your DWG into SketchUp, you will need to know if they are compatible or not. Only the SketchUp Pro version supports importing CAD files into it; any lesser versions like SketchUp Web/Free, Make or Shop will not let you do this. Since the Pro Bundle and Unity come with SketchUp Pro, they support importing as well. Files spawned by most versions of AutoCAD are supported by the latest version of SketchUp Pro. However, AutoCAD 2013-14 version files work best in SketchUp, so you might probably want to save your drawing to that version format if you were using a higher version of AutoCAD.

Chaos group launched V-ray for Unreal 1 to fetch v-ray scenes from sketchup directly into unreal engine

Chaos recently introduced V-Ray for Unreal 1 to deliver V-Ray scenes from Autodesk 3ds Max and Maya, Trimble SketchUp, and McNeel Rhino directly into Unreal Engine, a series of 3D content development tools from Epic Games that produces photorealistic rendering in real time.

The users will be able to render ray-traced, photorealistic images with V-Ray directly from Unreal.

V-Ray for Unreal Update 1 provides support for native Unreal materials, so anybody having a secured Unreal pipeline can render animations, still images, and more as a whole, with 100% ray-traced precision.

This feature facilitates the designers to avail various V-Ray techniques like photorealistic light baking and interactive rendering, devoid of modifying their workflows.

The update offers specific benefit for CAD users by providing 1:1 support for Datasmith material translations. Datasmith belongs to a collection of tools and plugins which allow the artists and designers importing the data into Unreal Engine; it supports CAD and digital content development sources along with Autodesk 3ds Max.

Update 1 also provides viewport rendering, therefore the users can render interactively, with the effects of light and material adjusts rapidly which are shown in the Unreal viewport. If required, the users can activate V-Ray to generate photorealistic “beauty shots” and reference checks from inside Unreal. Physically based lighting offers the designers with the most realistic view of how their assets will be demonstrated in a real-world situation.

“V-Ray for Unreal contains improved KPF’s visualization process from offline rendering to VR and AR, facilitating the users to obtain superior, faster results with fewer applications. The light baking functionality facilitates baking large scenes with greater quality. Rendering can be performed on CPUs, NVIDIA GPUs, or a combination thereof.

The light baking (quantifying lighting and shadow effects before time while rendering an object) is now as much as 60% faster, whereas retaining quality levels.

Pricing: V-Ray for Unreal Update 1 is free for existing customers; new seats can be brought $80 (monthly) or $470 (annually). Education pricing of $99 is accessible for students, educators, and universities.

An exclusive course on interior design with AutoCAD and Sketchup

AUB is conducting an exclusive course alias Interior Design with AutoCAD and Sketchup that will be commenced on every Tuesday at 6 PM from Tuesday 24th January – 28th March 2017.

The course will provide detailed guidelines for the beginners who use AutoCAD and Sketchup for interior design. This course is ideal for the students who are studying ‘1-Year Interior Design Programme’ of AUB and any introductory short courses on interior design.

The course will provide brief information on how to apply computer programmes to draw easy to follow plans as well as 3D representations of spaces for interior design. The training will be supported with demonstrations, lectures, discussions and practical training to demonstrate your interior design skills in computer aided drawings.

While undergoing this course, you will be assisted with exploring and utilizing the fundamentals of CAD (Computer Aided Design) given below:

Gather knowledge on ‘the ribbon’ and drawing system
Panning and zooming – viewing your design on screen
Application of the line, rectangle, circle, arc, offset, copy, fillet and trim tools
How to apply the above mentioned tools for drawing a basic floor plan
Making blocks
Gather knowledge on annotation and dimensions.

Besides, be familiar with the basic tools and practices in SketchUp (3D Modelling Programme) as given below:

Tips to apply the drawing tools, measuring tool, push/ pull tool, follow me tool, orbit, pan and zoom tools. Process for drawing an interior space in 3D, include colours and finishes and then insert furniture and accessories. Process for drawing a building and including a roof, windows and doors.
