Always Use Proxy Components in SketchUp for Faster Rendering

Rendering is always a time-taking task, no matter what application you use. SketchUp offers some easiest solutions that not only make your design better than others but also speed up your modeling process. Proxy components are such time-saver feature that allows you to work faster on your model and get a picture realistic rendering.

Proxy component, in SketchUp term, is used to replace objects with high-poly counts so that you can avoid the delay to complete the rendering. Saving time in rendering will let you focus on other designing detail of your SketchUp.

You can use both low-poly and high-poly count in Proxy component as per your requirement. Creating models and setting their views will preferably be done with the low poly version. The high-poly count is used for the rendering that maintains the quality of the picture. Current components of your model get the required replacement with this feature. You can use the same name for replacing your current component with low poly and high poly geometry. You can also create a new component with a different name that has high-poly layer in the original form and low poly geometry in low poly layer.

How to create a Proxy component: Creating a proxy component follows simple steps. Right a click on the component you want to replace and choose Create Lo-Poly Proxy Component from RP Tools submenu. You need to select the options you want for your model and click ‘OK’.

After clicking Create Lo-Poly Proxy Component option, you will get a dialogue box containing all essential details that you need to choose.

These are:

• Replace existing component
• Create component with new name
• Criss-cross images
• Wireframe Bock

Criss-cross proxy object can be restored to the previous position with choosing restore component from Lo-Poly proxy.

Terms that you need to know:

• Criss-cross images – As the name says, your model will appear in crisss-cross look for thumbnail image.
• Block with images – it blocks the images of the original component.
• Wire Frame Block – wire frame blocks will replace the components you select.

Layers after conversion:

• Low-Poly On – component with low poly geometry will be displayed.
• Hi-Poly On – the original component and geometry will be displayed.
• Both on – both layers are turned on in your model.

Proxy components solve the most complex problem while designing on SketchUp. Rendering always takes times and it slows the system. With this feature, you can easily avoid the issue and make your rendering better and faster.

Here is also a link of a video tutorial that will guide you on how you can create proxy components.

For a bigger project, it becomes very difficult to operate through all the supplementary geometry in your project. So, editing groups and components also becomes very complicated. But one can easily overcome this issue by applying some sketchup tips.

The existing setting for this model is not to conceal the rest of the model at the time of editing so while going for editing a complicated scene your view should appear like below :-

LumenRT 2015 - The Communication Platform for Architecture and GeoDesign

LumenRT 2015 - The Communication Platform for Architecture and GeoDesign
In the rapidly growing field of 3D design visualization and rendering, there are many tools that can produce pretty pictures and videos. Whether creating output to win a project bid, sharing design intent with colleagues and contractors, or creating consumer oriented advertising, the need for high-fidelity, photorealistic 3D is clearly a mainstream requirement across the entire design-build-manage process. However, the tools and applications serving this important market suffer from a number of chronic deficiencies:
  • Difficult to use with long learning curves
  • Require specialized CG knowledge
  • Are not well integrated into CAD/BIM/GIS design applications
  • Have limited ability to render designs in a complete environmental context (e.g. trees, people, vehicles, water, terrains)
  • Create static output that must be “re-rendered” if new points of view are required or if changing the lighting/time-of-day
  • Do not handle large-scale scenes very well
Enter e-on software, the world’s leader in natural scenery rendering. The company has recently introduced a major upgrade to its real-time immersive nature solution -- LumenRT 2015. LumenRT solves traditional rendering tool shortcomings in a very feature-rich, attractively priced offering that allows architects, designers, engineers, and GIS professionals to convey their designs in a much more compelling and engaging fashion.

Simple Workflow – Zero Learning Curve
One of the defining features of LumenRT is that it allows full scene authoring inside the source CAD/BIM/GIS system making it much easier to learn the system and maintain a single “source of truth” for all objects added to the model. The LumenRT export plugins include a full proxy library of plants, people, animals, and vehicles which are added directly to the scene using the familiar tools available in the CAD/BIM/GIS system. In SketchUp for example, trees are added using a SketchUp component library that allow users to simply drag and drop objects into the scene and adjust the size and position using the standard SketchUp tools. The components are low-polygon object “proxies” which are automatically converted to their full fidelity, full motion counterparts in LumenRT.

Importance of sketchup dynamic components in construction

PART 01- Making Component Database

The Dynamic components will represent anything in the construction world such as pumps, pipes, valves, steel, concrete or electrical instruments. The attributes that are assigned into the dynamic components can be simple pieces of extra information like Part Number, Cost and Weight. Attributes can also contain spatial relationships (like how two parts are positioned relative to each other), and behaviors (like animation and smart scaling). Some Dynamic Components are very simple (a pipe elbow with a part number attached), and some are very complex.

PART 02- Assembly the database to make a construction prototype
By the collaboration between owners, construction management teams and contractors, I can assembly, move, rotate and scale all components in the model in the way that all people want to. The objective of this collaboration via the sketchUp model is to get the project prototype in which when it goes to the construction phase it will not change!. To do this is easy, firstly show the everyone the prototype and walk them through the model as if they are playing game. Everyone can change whatever they want to.

LayOut is the program I have been using for making construction drawing. It links the plans, elevation and sections of the finished model to the 2d drawings within the 2D CAD environment. Updating and changing the construction drawings can be done more easy than conventional 2d CAD like AutoCAD, because the 2d construction document in LayOut can update automatically when the sketchUp model is changed or updated.
