An exclusive tutorial on Soft, Smooth and Hidden Edges in Sketchup

Aaron Dietzen, sales engineer at Trimble Sketchup, presents an exclusive sketchup video that briefly explains the differences between soft, smooth and hidden edges in Sketchup as well as how to manage them. These are the most useful properties of sketchup. This sketchup tutorial is based on 3d chessboard model. This is a part of sketchup skill builder series to model efficiently and quickly. The video will also explain how to find a solution if a line is hidden or softened.

The Soften Edges feature can be applied, together with the smooth/edge property, to modify the visibleness of the edges and transform the model to become more convincing with less geometry. It will enhance the performance of the computer.

While trying to soften an edge, the edge is hidden, and the faces that the edge bounds turns to be a surface entity.

Smooth: While smoothing an edge, it includes shading to create a smooth appearance of the faces. But, If the smooth property is applied individually, the edge stays apparent.

Hide : An edge can also be hidden (or any geometry, the hidden property isn’t separated from edges). For a hidden edge, the edge is not evident, but any faces connecting the edge are not converted into a surface entity.

It is suggested to apply the eraser tool to instantly smooth and soften the edges. Open the Soften Edges dialog box, if more modifications are required.

How To Use Solid Tools In Sketchup To Design A Table

This sketchup tutorial will show how to create a table in different way by applying solid tools in Sketchup Pro 2016. The tutorial is a part of sketchup skill builder series.

The Solid tools in sketchup will produce new shapes with the integration or cutting one shape with another that simplify the process to model an outer shell or joinery.

SketchUp’s Solid tools can only perform on SketchUp solids. In SketchUp, a solid belongs to any 3D model (component or group) that contains a finite closed volume. A solid in sketchup does not include any leaks (missing faces or faces that do not come across at an edge).

In order to verify either your group or component is a solid entity or not, right-click on it and select Entity Info. When the Entity Info dialog box will appear, the upper-left corner points out if the selection is a solid or not. If it becomes difficult to recognize leaks that resist your model to be functional as a solid entity, explore through the Extensions Warehouse to obtain a third-party plugin useful for resolving the issue.

How to use 3D mouse to navigate through your model easily

Aaron Bishop develops SpaceMouse Pro and various other 3D mouses. In this sketchup video Aaron shows how to use a 3D mouse to navigate through your model smoothly with least waste. The advantage of applying 3D mouse is to involve both hands in a well-adjusted and supportive work style. One hand is kept engaged with the 3D mouse to place the model or navigate the location whereas your other hand concurrently applies the customary mouse to select, generate or edit.

Walk This Way: 3D mouse facilitates the users to walk through any model conveniently. Choose camera mode to visualize your architectural design efficiently.

3DxSketchUp Toolbar: Easy to use buttons permit the uses to toggle between camera and object mode instantly as well as rapidly arrange and adjust the center of rotation and make navigation easier to rapidly deactivate rolling.

Fast Zoom (Zoom to Cursor): There is Fast Zoom or Zoom to Cursor option and it can be used just by pressing the middle mouse button and shifting your 3Dconnexion 3D mouse cap backward and forward.

Sketchup tutorial on how to optimize the process for developing the window component

Aaron Bishop presents this sketchup tutorial useful for woodworking professionals. The tutorial shows how to use the "Glue to:" and "Cut opening" features for developing a window component. This sketchup tutorial is the part of sketchup skill builder series.

Glue to allows a component to bind to a definite plane. If a component is glued to a surface, it can be moved on that surface by the Move tool.

Cut Opening check box is activated for components “in” a surface to automatically cut an opening in surfaces the component is attached.

Tips:

• To arrange a gluing plane, choose one of the following options available in the Glue To drop-down list: Any, Horizontal, Vertical, Sloped. Once a gluing plane is selected, the Cut Opening checkbox turns out to be functional, and the Always Face Camera and Shadows Face Sun options turn out to be inactive.

• Activate the Cut Opening checkbox to make your component prepared to cut an opening in a face.

• If you want to detach a glued component out of a specific surface, right-click it and select Unglue from the context menu.

How to resolve visual display issue for remote distance - An exclusive sketchup tutorial

This sketchup video is part of the sketchup skill builder series. This sketchup tutorial is created with Sketchup Pro 2016.This video is presented by Chris and he briefly explains how to resolve the issue while importing any third party models created with IFC or DWG file formats which are in a remote distance from the origin. Besides, you will be introduced to an extension called Axes tools developed by Thomas Thomassen that will make the process easy for importing the models. To run the extension, you require TT_Lib2 2.7.0.

Axes tools can reset the axis of components to their bounding box' centre or corners. This sketchup extension can resolve the problems occurred while importing pesky DWG files, the insertion point of the blocks are in a remote distance resulting in dithering the components.
