3D Drawing with SketchUp

SketchUp Make from Trimble is your answer. SketchUp is a software program that allows you to draw and design in 3D. Your students will benefit from an opportunity to explore, create and express themselves in a visual way and effectively convey what they are thinking.

To get started, visit www.sketchup.com and download the free version of SketchUp Make. Be sure to click on the Learn tab and view the video tutorials, which provide comprehensive, step-by-step instructions on how to get started.

I would suggest you begin with tool familiarization. Have your students open SketchUp, select a template and move the mouse above each tool to see an explanation of what it does. Allow some class time for them to try out each tool so they can begin to experience the power of SketchUp.

To capture your student’s attention, get started with a basic activity that incorporates the use of the Push-Pull tool, the Orbit tool and the Offset tool. You will quickly witness the excitement and desire to learn more as they see their designs come alive.

In addition to the video tutorials, the SketchUp website offers self-paced tutorials, Getting Started printable guides and Quick Reference cards. There are many ways to incorporate this program into the curriculum. Reading Anne Frank in Middle School Language Arts class? How about asking the students to design the space where Anne Frank hid? Studying architecture of the past? How about creating a 3D model of an ancient pyramid?

Autodesk launches Cloud-Supported 3D Character Generator

Autodesk adds a new wing to its cloud based application by introducing Character Generator. It is a user-friendly web-based application that facilitates the users to produce customized, improvised and animatable 3D characters virtually.
After completing the design, the users can utilize the characters for a wide array of applications like populating game scenes, mastering animation and modeling, producing models for pre-visualization, design visualization and lots other. Character Generator necessitates five cloud credits per high-resolution character download in favor of clients on Autodesk subscription or rental plans. Students and educators can avail the product at free of cost. Besides, anybody can also avail a lighter version of the application at free of cost for generating low-resolution and crowd characters.

Character Generator was formed following customer’s opinion incorporated during the development, and consists of a powerful library of pre-built male, female and creature characters. In order to produce exceptional characters, the users can apply perceptive slider and selection functions by mixing and morphing the physical characteristics of the pre-built models which range from body traits to facial features, skin color, hair styles, clothing and more. Once completed, the users will be able to leverage cloud credits for exporting their 3D works to leading software like Autodesk Maya, Maya LT and 3ds Max for more customization and animation as well as utilizing in game engines like Unity through Autodesk subscription or rental plans.
Character Generator contains the following exclusive features:
  • A wide-ranging collection of male, female and fantasy characters, by which users will get the ability to merge two dissimilar sources to form an original design
  • Select from indefinite virtually collection of skin, eye, hair, clothing and shoes
  • Targeted blending options to filter characters for each feature basis
  • Any characters can be saved in the cloud and altered in the future as required
  • Autodesk subscription and rental customers can get access to a body, bone and blend-shape facial rig collection that is well versed with Autodesk HumanIK middleware to facilitate keyframe, motion-capture or facial animation in Autodesk software

Some useful tips for sketchup modelers while creating a sketchup model

Tip 1: While creating models for a small detailed object as for instance a light bulb filament or zipper pull, it becomes very difficult for sketchup users to find the perfect geometry or it becomes very complicated to maneuver the object inside the larger model.

To get rid of such issues, just follow these steps - Initially model the object at a bigger range like fifteen times the real scale. After completing it, create a group of the object and reduce it 15 times to the actual scale.

Tip 2: While dealing with an outsized site plan, the sketchup users often face problem to control sketchup models on screen as the models become unmanageable. There are several methods to cope up with the situation - keep away from multifaceted visual styles, turning off shadows as well as concealing groups and components on layers at the time of working. But if the sketchup users hide particular objects from view, they may not be able to complete the model successfully. So the users should follow some useful tips to maintain the objects to be detectable on screen and at the same time navigate the model as actively as per their requirements.

As for example the sketchup user deals with a site model and it necessitates that the users can view the exact location of numerous trees while starting the modeling process. If the user applies even fairly comprehensive 3d trees, the modeling process becomes very slower. Model an uncomplicated, low-polygon “popsicle" tree component and utilize that like a placeholder for the trees. Apply this low-poly model as a proxy and position it toward the exact location of the trees.

Once all the modeling process will be completed and scenes are placed, just right click on one of the popsicle tree components and opt for “reload” to explore more detailed 3d tree that fits in the final view. And if the detailed tree is already positioned on the site plan someplace in the file, click on the Components dialogue and select the home icon for viewing the list of components available in the existing file. With any "popsicle” tree Component selected, get the list within the detailed tree model, right-click over it and choose “Replace Selected”. In this case, just ensure that the component axis is identical for both proxy and detailed model.

The sketchup users can apply these tips for any kind of circumstances.
